Google to rank websites based on facts not links

________ A to Z kerala .......... [kvk] [www.atozkerala.in , www.atozkerala.blogspot.com]

LONDON: Google plans to rank websites on its search engine based on factual accuracy, a move that will prevent sites full of misinformation from appearing first in search results.

The search engine currently uses the number of incoming links to a web page as a proxy for quality, determining where it appears in search results. So pages that many other sites link to are ranked higher.

The disadvantage of the system is that websites full of misinformation can rise up the rankings, if enough people link to them, 'New Scientist' reported.

The trustworthiness of a web page might help it rise up Google's rankings if the search giant starts to measure quality by facts.

A Google research team is adapting that model to measure the trustworthiness of a page, rather than its reputation across the web.

Instead of counting incoming links, the system will count the number of incorrect facts within a page.

The score they compute for each page is its Knowledge-Based Trust score. The software works by tapping into the Knowledge Vault, the vast store of facts that Google has pulled off the internet.

Those facts which the web unanimously agrees on are considered a reasonable proxy for truth. Web pages that contain contradictory information are bumped down the rankings.

Muslim quota: Sena tells Owaisi to pursue his demands in Pak

MUMBAI: Hitting out at AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi for demanding reservation for Muslims in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena Tuesday said that if the minority leader wants his demands to be met on religious grounds, then he should go to Pakistan and try his antics there.
Terming Owaisi's speeches "hateful", the Sena said that the Devendra Fadnavis government should file a case against him and start legal proceedings.
"(Asaduddin) Owaisi is insisting that Muslims should get reservation akin to the Marathas. Such insistence had caused the separation of Pakistan from India. Hatred for Hindus compelled a section of Muslims to take control over Pakistan. Hence Owaisi may try and get his demands based on religious grounds fulfilled in Pakistan," said an edit piece in the Sena mouthpiece, 'Saamana'.
It added that the minority community will have to respect India as their motherland.
"They (minority community) will have to respect the Uniform Civil Code and stop demanding the continuation of Article 370 for Kashmir. Asking for reservations while continuing with religious rants will not work," it said.
"Owaisi says 'Muslims have suffered a lot and hence I speak up for them'. But will he give a count of the sufferings of Hindus due to the terrorist activities of extremist Muslims? If extremists start communal violence and terrorist activities after listening to his speeches... Owaisi's speeches should be termed as hateful and action should be taken against him," the Sena said.
Addressing a public gathering in Nagpur on Saturday night, Owaisi, the 45-year-old Lok Sabha MP from Hyderabad, had demanded reservation for backward Muslims in government jobs and educational institutes in Maharashtra.
Claiming that "injustice" has been done to Muslims in Maharashtra, Owaisi had blamed the more than 50 years of Congress rule at the Centre and the Congress-NCP and Shiv Sena -BJP governments in the state for the prevailing backwardness of minority community members.

Jammu: Ruling Peoples Democratic Party in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday demanded from the National Democratic Alliance government the return of the mortal remains of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, a day after assuming power in alliance with BJP.

Eight PDP MLAs issued a statement in this regard saying the party 'promises to follow vigorously' for the return of the mortal remains. Guru was hanged on February 9, 2013 inside Tihar Jail.

'PDP stands by the demand for return of his (Guru's) mortal remains, and the party promises to follow vigorously for the return of the mortal remains,' the PDP statement said.

The legislators who signed the statement are Mohammad Khalil Bandh, Zahoor Ahmed Mir, Raja Manzoor Ahmad, Mohd Abas Wani, Yawar Dilawar Mir, Advocate Mohd Yosuf, Aijaz Ahmad Mir and Noor Mohd Sheikh.

'PDP has always maintained that late Afzal Guru's hanging was travesty of justice and constitutional requirements and process was not followed in hanging him out of turn,' the statement said.

'The way he was picked up from serial no.28 and singled out has been condemned by PDP and it stands by the demand for return of his mortal remains...,' it said.

'We believe that the resolution brought by Independent MLA Rashid Ahmed to seek clemency for late Afzal Guru was justified and should have been adopted by the House at that time,' he said.

In 2011, the resolution seeking clemency for Guru could not be taken up in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly due to pandemonium in the House.

The resolution became void as according to rules, any listed business that does not come up for discussion would lapse.
