Pinarayi seeks probe against Sudhakaran

Thiruvananthapuram:Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan Saturday asked the Kerala government to register a case and begin an enquiry against Congress Lok Sabha member K. Sudhakaran, following new revelation made in a shooting case.
Sudhakaran is a former Kerala state minister and is presently the Lok Sabha member from Kannur.
Addressing reporters here, Vijayan said the new revelations have come from a former aide (Prasanth Babu) of Sudhakaran who was also his driver.
'He has revealed that the shooting of the then Kannur CPI-M district secretary E.P. Jayarajan was done after a conspiracy hatched by Sudhakaran at his residence in Kannur,' said Vijayan.

Vijayan also said that Babu has revealed that Sudhakaran was behind two other attacks in Kannur in which one person was killed and another seriously injured.
Jayarajan, currently a CPI-M legislator from Kannur district, was shot at on board the Rajdhani Express at Chirala in Andhra Pradesh on April 12, 1995 while traveling from New Delhi to Kannur.
'In the light of the new revelation, the home ministry here should give direction to the police to register a case against Sudhakaran,' added Vijayan.
'Babu has said that even though a case was registered against the people who actually did the shooting, Sudhakaran got away after the Congress government here influenced politicians in Andhra Pradesh and his name was not there in the list of accused,' added Vijayan.

Reacting to the developments, Jayarajan said that it was known that he was shot by a group of people selected to do the job.
'Now that the name of Sudhakaran has come out, the police should find out the truth,' said Jayarajan.
Sudhakaran told reporters that Babu was never a close aide as mentioned but was his driver for just a month.
'I will cooperate with any enquiry and I welcome a probe into the new revelations. But it must be known that Babu, today is unemployed and has lost his job in a bank which is governed by CPI-M members and it is least surprising that since he wants his job, he has to please the CPI-M,' said Sudhakaran.
Home Minister T. Radhakrishnan told reporters that the government had a policy to look into the matter if there was any truth in the new revelations.
'The high court the other day upheld a case that we registered based on a new revelation and hence we will enquire into this revelation also,' said Radhakrishnan.
Director General of Police Jacob Punnoose said that the police have a standard procedure wherein first, they will find out from the person who made the revelation and depending on the veracity of the information, they will decide to go ahead or not

PM voices concern over quality of medical educ PUDUCHERRY: Expressing concern over the quality of medical education, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday said a "credible regulatory" mechanism should be put in place and a "serious look" given at the curriculum. "There is a perception of deteriorating quality. We cannot allow this situation to continue. We must put in place a credible regulatory and institutional mechanism to help develop standards in our medical education," he said in his address at the third convocation in Jawaharlal Institute of Post graduate Medical Education and Research in Puducherry.

He said a serious look at the curriculum for medical education needs to be taken so that doctors are trained to look at health in a holistic manner that goes beyond a narrow clinical and technology-driven approach.

Observing that the country faces "serious challenges" in assuring the health and well-being of people, he said, health indicators continue to be poor and high mortality rates of infants and pregnant women have been a cause of serious concern.

Despite decades of implementing health and family welfare programmes, the country was still faced with a situation where two thirds of health expenditure was borne by people from out of their pockets, with a large proportion of this expenditure being on purchase of drugs, he said.

"Our government has decided to continue the National Rural Health Mission for the next five years. We are now proposing a new National Urban Health Mission in order to focus on the health challenges in our towns and cities," he said in the presence of union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and others.

Singh said shortage of doctors, nurses and public health professionals was emerging as one of the most important impediments to providing universal health coverage and this was acute in rural areas, particularly in northern, central and eastern regions of the country.

Against a desirable rate of one doctor per 1,000 population and three nurses per doctor, the country has one doctor per 2,000 people and three nurses for every two doctors, he said.

"The Centre and the state governments, particularly state governments of the under-served regions, need to put their heads together, prepare strategies and implement urgent measures to remedy the situation," he said.

CU to conduct re-exam for 2,500 students.

KOZHIKODE: The Calicut univercity has decided to conduct re-examinations for around 2,500 degree students, whose answer sheets could not be identified as a result of damaged barcodes. The decision to conduct re-examination was taken at the university syndicate meeting held on Friday based on the recommendation of the examinations standing committee. The meeting decided that the re- examination would be done on a war footing and the results would be published within 20 days.
As many as 46 BCom students, whose answer papers have gone missing from the varsity, will also appear for re-examination.The non-publication of results of students who have finished their six semester degree course, mainly due to damaged barcodes or in some cases due to missing of answer sheets, have been haunting the varsity, as it has been desperately trying to wrap up the course of the first batch of degree students passing out under the choice based credit semester system. The varsity has published the final results of the BA, BCom and BSc courses, except that of the 2,500 odd students.

"There have been instances of issuance of duplicate barcodes in some cases. We intend to solve the entire issue by conducting a re-examination for all the affected students. The re-examination process will be fast tracked to announce the result within the next 20 days," he said.
The syndicate meeting also decided to take steps for setting up three model colleges in Palakkad, Malappuram and Wayanad districts under the UGC's programme to set up model degree colleges in 374 educationally backward districts,.
The meeting also approved starting of self-financing courses in M Ed and diploma course in early childhood care and education at the Vadagara teacher education centre. The department of lifelong learning and extension would start M>A>course in counseling.

"There were regular fights in the family and Kishan was disturbed and shout mostly in night," neighbours told police.
Raju was working as a labor in the construction sector and he was a habitual drinker. "Last night, Raju came home drunk and there was some quarrel between the brothers when Kishan asked a rupee from his mother. Raju intervened and asked his mother not to give a single paisa," police said.
As fight ensued between the brothers, Raju abused Ksihan as a "madman" and earn nothing. "There were loud cries coming from the house and it was regular event," neighbours said.
During interrogation, Kishan told police that he felt humiliated and decided to take revenge. "When both his mother and brother were sleeping, Kishan took out the flaps of the ceiling fan and attacked his mother first and then Raju. There was blood everywhere but Kishan was not satisfied and brought an iron rod from courtyard and again attacked the bodies," police said.
In the morning, Kishan told people that his mother and brother were murdered and cried before them. "On receiving the information, we rushed to the spot and found brutally murdered bodies. We were assuming of a theft first," an official said. Kishan denied anything to do with the murder and cried all time for his mother. "We suspected Kishan and detained him for interrogation," police said.
The bodies were sent for post-mortem and police interrogated Kishan for eight hours after which he finally "admitted" to committing the murders. "We have arrested Kishan in the double murder case and waiting for the post-mortem report," said officials.
A year ago, a similar case came into light in Christian ganj where a boy with the help of his friends killed his mother and brother just to get the full compensation amount of the insurance policy of his deceased father.
