LONDON: Five sons of hate preacher Abu Hamza, who is fighting extradition to the US from Britain, have been convicted of serious offences ranging from bomb making to fraud and assaulting police, the Daily Mail reported Sunday.

Hamza is charged in the US with 11 counts relating to taking of 16 hostages in Yemen in 1998, advocating jehad in Afghanistan and conspiring to set up a jehad training camp in the US. He lost both hands and an eye fighting the Soviet Union in Afghanistan.

His four sons have already served custodial sentences while the fifth is awaiting sentence for an armed robbery.

Hamza has nine children from two marriages, including a stepson with his second wife.

Of the seven sons, all aged over 18, only two have not been in trouble with the law. His two youngest children are girls aged 16 and 13.

The preacher was married in 1980 to Valerie Traverso, a British woman, and divorced four years later after having one son Mohammed. He has seven children with his second wife Najat and a stepson Mohssin Ghailan.

Hamza and four other terror suspects are facing extradition to America within days after the European Court of Human Rights rejected their appeal to stay in Britain.

The US first requested Hamza's extradition in 2004. The process was put on hold when Hamza was charged in Britain with 15 offences under the Terrorism Act.

In 2006, Hamza was found guilty on 11 charges, including inciting murder and race hate, and was jailed for seven years.

Telangana: Deputy CM, ministers threaten to quit

HYDERABAD: The deputy chief minister of Andhra Pradesh and other ministers from Telangana region have threatened to quit for the sake of separate statehood to the region.

Condemning the arrests of Telangana supporters coming to Hyderabad for the Telangana march, Deputy Chief Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha warned that if the people were harmed he would not hesitate to resign.

Ministers K Jana Reddy and B Saraiah met the deputy chief minister to discuss the latest situation arising out of the arrests of Telangana protestors in various districts. They alleged that the government had gone back on its word to allow peaceful march.

Jana Reddy, who played a key role in obtaining permission for the march, said the time had come for them to make a choice between the ministerial posts and the cause of Telangana.

All the ministers from the region plan to meet here on Sunday evening to chalk out their future course of action.

With Congress MPs from the region lodging their strong protest outside the chief minister's office-cum-residence, which led to their arrest twice since morning, the ministers were under pressure to speak out.

Pro-Telangana groups of Osmania University students demanded that the ministers should come for the Telangana march only after resigning from the ministry.

Suspended BJD leader announces formation of Odisha Jana Morcha
BHUBANESWAR: About four months after his suspension from ruling BJD, Rajya Sabha MP Pyari Mohan Mohapatra on Sunday announced formation of Odisha Jana Morcha (OJM), which he claimed was not political outfit but a front to bring reforms in the regional party.

"Odisha Jana Morcha has been formed. It is not a political party but a front. More information about it will be given later," Mohapatra told PTI over phone.

The formation of OJM by Mohapatra came amidst a variety of speculations in Odisha political circles ever since he was suspended from BJD for allegedly engineering a coup bid against Naveen Patnaik government on May 29 when the chief minister was away in the UK.

Though Mohapatra, once considered the chief strategist of the chief minister and BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik, did not elaborate about his new front, senior BJD leader Jagyashwar Babu told reporters that the primary objective of the Morcha was to bring about reforms in the regional party.

The morcha, which is simply a front within BJD, aims at strengthening the party and pushing it in the right direction with true inner democracy, said Babu, who has been made the spokesman of the morcha.

"Our aim is to ensure that the ideals and wishes of the legendary leader Biju Patnaik are honoured and fulfilled," he said, adding details about the new body would be announced once it takes a proper shape.

Reacting to the move taken by Mohapatra, state parliamentary affairs minister Kalpataru Das said formation of the morcha would have little impact on BJD.

India crush Pakistan by 8 wickets to stay in World T20 semis hunt

COLOMBO: Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuvraj Singh set it up with a superb display of spin bowling before Virat Kohli took centrestage with an unbeaten 78 as an inspired India thrashed arch-rivals Pakistan by eight wickets to keep their title hopes alive in the ICC World Twenty20 on Sunday.

Ashwin (2/16) and Yuvraj (2/16) snapped up four wickets between themselves as Pakistan were shot out for a meagre 128 in 19.4 overs. Lakshmipathy Balaji also complemented the 'spin twins' with impressive figures of 3/22 in 3.4 overs.

Kohli, who has been Pakistan's nemesis in the past, hit a scintillating unbeaten 78 off 61 balls as India won with three overs to spare. The Delhi lad hit nine boundaries and two sixes to take the team home in the high-voltage contest watched by a capacity crowd.

However, Pakistan are still ahead in terms of net run rate of -0.426 which is shade better than India's -0.452. Had India won with 20 balls to spare, they would have been No. 2 in the group.

India will now have to defeat South Africa in their last group-2 match on Tuesday to make it to the semifinals.

India's unbeaten record against Pakistan in ICC World Cups has thus been kept intact having beaten them five times in the 50-over version and thrice in the T20 format.

Kohli started with a thickish outside edge off Raza Hasan for a boundary but then played some lovely strokes. A backfoot cover drive off Saeed Ajmal and lovely cover drive off Yasir Arafat were glorious strokes.

He also lofted Shahid Afridi over long-off for a six. Whether driving on the up or playing off his hips, Kohli was a treat to watch.

Virender Sehwag, on the other hand, was happy to play the second fiddle during the 74-run partnership for the second wicket but did play a lovely lofted shot off Umar Gul's bowling.

Pakistan captain Mohammed Hafeez's decision to bat first on a slow Premadasa track failed to produce the desired result as Ashwin and Yuvraj frustrated the opposition batsmen by maintaining superb line and length.

Ashwin, who operated from round the wicket, had superb figures of two for 16 from four overs while Yuvraj also had identical figures but from three overs.

The duo snapped four Pakistan wickets for only 32 runs in seven overs and it was the reason why Hafeez and Co could not reach a respectable total. Lakshmipathy Balaji also complemented the 'spin twins' with impressive figures of 3/22 in 3.4 overs.

The only notable partnership was of 47 runs between Shoaib Malik and Umar Akmal. Malik was the top scorer with 28 before he gave an easy catch to Rohit Sharma. Last match's hero Umar Akmal played a pull shot off an Ashwin delivery but couldn't clear Suresh Raina in the deep.

India versus Pakistan matches are never short of drama and this match was also not an exception. Zaheer Khan's first over saw him bowl three wide deliveries and then being square driven by Imran Nazir for a boundary before Virender Sehwag dropped the opener at first slip.

Irfan Pathan started off the collapse by removing Nazir who had shuffled a long way but the umpire thought that left-arm seamer's incoming delivery would have hit the stumps. Nazir stood his ground for a while before leaving.

To everyone's disbelief, Shahid Afridi walked in at No 3 and smashed the first delivery from Pathan over his head and then another boundary off the bowler through the cover region.

However, with the former Pakistan captain, opposition teams always fancy a chance and Balaji bowled a short one which Afridi tried to pull it over mid-wicket boundary but was caught by Suresh Raina at the boundary ropes. Afridi made only 14.

Yuvraj then got into the act as he removed left-hander Nasir Jamshed and wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal in quick succession to reduce Pakistan to 49 for four. Both hurried onto their shots.

Jamshed tried to play a slog-sweep which was smartly taken by Dhoni while Kamran tried an expansive cover drive of an arm ball only to give the Indian captain his second catch.

Pakistan captain Hafeez scratched around for 28 balls for his 15 before he dragged one onto his stumps off part-timer Virat Kohli's bowling.

Umar and Malik then got together to conjure a partnership but Ashwin dismissed both of them in quick succession to end Pakistan's chances of a big score.

Comet shining 15 times brighter than moon will fly by Earth
Tags: comet, brighter, moon, fly, earth

LONDON: A comet which shines 15 times brighter than the moon and potentially visible in broad daylight will fly by the Earth next year, giving humans a chance to witness one of the most spectacular events.

Comet ISON is visiting the inner solar system and is set to put on spectacular views for the Northern Hemisphere across November and December in 2013 as it heads toward the sun, the Daily Mail reported.

The comet, discovered by astronomers in Russia using the International Scientific Optical Network telescope, will pass within two million miles of the sun's surface.

The comet, researchers say, is supposed to be on a 'parabolic' orbit which means it probably originated from the outer skirts of the solar system from the Oort cloud - a mass of icy debris which lies 50,000 times further from the sun than the Earth.

It is currently moving inwards from beyond Jupiter, and as it approaches the Earth, the 'dirty snowball' could produce a dazzling display, burning brighter than the moon and potentially being visible in broad daylight.

Comet ISON may prove to be brighter than any comet of the last century, visible even in broad daylight, and this may end up being its one and only trip to the solar system, as its trajectory may see it plunge into the sun in a fiery death.

Comets are dusty balls of ice, which generally originate from the Kuipler belt - a region of icy small bodies beyond Neptune. Occasionally, a comet gets dislodged from its orbit, and plunges in to the inner solar system.

Halley's comet is the most well-known, named after Edmond Halley who noted the regular 75-76-year appearance of a comet, and predicted it would return in 1758. Halley's comet has passed within a fraction of the Earth before - in 1910 the Earth even moved through the comet's tail.

"This is a very exciting discovery. The comet looks like it could become a very spectacular sight in the evening sky after sunset from the UK in late November and early December next year," vice-president of the Society for Popular Astronomy Robin Scagell was quoted as saying by the paper.

"Our members will be eagerly following it as it makes its first trip around the Sun and hoping to see it shining brilliantly and displaying a magnificent tail as it releases powerful jets of gas and dust," Scagell said.

Delhi bank robbery: Police arrests 3, recovers Rs 2.36 crore

NEW DELHI: Two days after the audacious Rs 5.25 crore heist in south Delhi, police on Sunday claimed to have cracked the case with the arrest of three persons including a robber and recovered Rs 2.36 crore.

Police said it has recovered over Rs 2.36 crore out of the money looted from a cash van of a cash replenishment agency in upscale Defence Colony on Friday afternoon, after a security guard who resisted the five robbers was shot. The guard succumbed to the bullet wound.

Investigators said at least four more robbers are to be apprehended in the case though the first arrest was made on Saturday.

The breakthrough in the case came after police managed to fish out dossiers from its records as victims, eye-witnesses and informers providing detailed description of suspects who were spotted in south Delhi's Malviya Nagar and Khirki areas.

Vivek Gogia, Joint Commissioner (South-West), confirmed the arrest of Deepak Sharma, who was allegedly involved in the crime with four others, at a press conference here though he kept silent on the arrest of the relatives of another accused who had hidden a big chuk of the looted money.

Police sources said two relatives of the another accused, who is on the run, were arrested and were produced before court. However, they refused to divulge the names of the arrested saying it could impede the investigations.

The gang had waylaid the cash van, pinned down a security guard and shot him after he tried to snatch their weapons.

They fled the spot in the cash van leaving behind the car in which they were following the vehicle.

They abandoned the car in Hauz Rani and later empty cash boxes were found in Khirki village where police deployed personnel in plain clothes on surveillance.

Two shot dead in Venezuelan political clash
CARACAS (VENEZUELA): Venezuelan officials say two people have been shot to death during a confrontation between supporters of President Hugo Chavez and his opponent in next month's presidential election, Henrique Capriles.

Justice Minister Tarek El Aissami says the shooting happened Saturday when loyalists of both candidates faced off on a road between the communities of Barinas and Barinitas in the country's central plains, about 280 miles (450 kilometers) southwest of Caracas, the capital.

The justice minister, who described the shooting as an ``isolated incident,'' said police were looking for the shooting and trying to determine what led to the confrontation.

Speaking in a telephone interview broadcast by state-run Venezolana de Television, Aissami did not say anything about the dead men's political affiliation. But opposition officials said both victims were in participants in a motorcade of Capriles supporters.

Opposition lawmaker Julio Cesar Reyes said a group of Chavez supporters had blocked the caravan and people on both sides were arguing when a man appeared with a gun and started shooting.

Clashes have erupted previously during the campaign for the Oct. 7 presidential election, but these were the first deaths tied to a political event.

At least 14 people were injured Sept. 12 during stone throwing that broke out after Chavez backers blocked a road trying to prevent Capriles from reaching a campaign event in the central city of Puerto Cabello.

In July, Chavez supporters threw rocks at opposition supporters who were accompanying Capriles in a march through a poor Caracas neighborhood. In March, shots rang out while Capriles was visiting a Caracas district that traditionally has been pro-Chavez and an opposition supporter was wounded.

Capriles, a former state governor, is considered the most serious rival that Chavez has faced since he was first elected president in 1998. The president is seeking another six-year term.

23 killed in blasts across Iraq
BAGHDAD: Bombs striking Shia neighbourhoods, security forces and other targets across Iraq killed at least 23 people Sunday, officials said. It was the latest instance in which insurgents launched coordinated attacks in multiple cities across the country in a single day, apparently intending to rekindle widespread sectarian conflict and undermine public confidence in the government.

The deadliest attack came in the town of Taji, a former al-Qaeda stronghold just north of Baghdad, where three explosive-rigged cars went off within minutes of each other. Police said eight people died and 28 were injured in the back-to-back blasts that began around 7.15 am local time.

In all, at least 82 people were wounded in the wave of attacks that stretched from the restive but oil-rich city of Kirkuk in Iraq’s north to the southern Shiite town of Kut.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the violence, but car bombs are a hallmark of al-Qaeda in Iraq. The militant network has vowed to take back areas of the country, like Taji, from which the Sunni insurgent network was pushed before U.S. troops withdrew last December.

Shortly after the Taji attacks, police said a suicide bomber set off his explosives-packed car in the Shia neighbourhood of Shula in northwest Baghdad. One person was killed and seven wounded. Police could not immediately identify the target.

“So many people were hurt. A leg of a person was amputated,” lamented Shula resident Naeem Frieh. “What have those innocent people done to deserve this?”

Within an hour, another suicide bomber drove a minibus into a security checkpoint in Kut, located 160 km southeast of Baghdad. Three police officers were killed and five wounded, Maj. Gen. Hussein Abdul-Hadi Mahbob said.

And in Iraq’s north, another policeman was killed when security forces were trying to defuse a car bomb parked on the main highway between the cities of Kirkuk and Tuz Khormato, said Kirkuk police chief Brig. Gen. Sarhad Qadir. A second policeman was wounded in the blast, Qadir said. Kirkuk is about 300 km north of Baghdad.

At around 10.30 a.m. local time, another parked car bomb went off next to a bus carrying Iranian pilgrims in the town of Madain, killing three Iraqis and injuring 11 others included seven Iranians, another police officer and health official said. Madain is mainly Sunni area located 20 km southeast of Baghdad.

In the town of Balad Ruz, 75 km northeast of Baghdad, a parked car bomb targeted a passing police patrol, killing two policemen and injuring seven others, a police officer and health official said. And in the nearby town of Khan Bani Saad, 15 kilometers (nine miles) northeast of Baghdad, yet another parked car bomb exploded near a market and killed one civilian and injured nine others, they added.

Two Iraqi soldiers were killed in the town of Tarmiyah, 50 km north of Baghdad, when their patrol hit a roadside bomb, another police officer and health official said. Six other people, including four civilians were wounded.

And in Baghdad, another parked car bomb went off next to a police patrol, killing a police officer and a civilian, other officials said. Eight other people were injured.
