Girl raped by cousin brother, accused arrested

MEERUT: A minor girl was allegedly raped by her cousin brother at Thana Medical area here, police said today. The accused has been arrested. The incident took place yesterday when Ravi (22) raped his eight-year-old cousin sister in an inebriated condition, they said. The victim's parents were not present at home when the incident took place, they said. After listening to the girl's plight, her parents informed the police and lodged a complaint, following which the accused was arrested and sent to a jail today, they added. treatment in various hospitals and the affected people have been shifted to safer places.

The government has constituted a one-member judicial commission headed by (retd) Justice Vishnu Sahai to probe into the Muzaffarnagar violence starting August 27 from the Kawal incident till September 9 and would submit its report in two months time. Concerned over the incidents, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh yesterday spoke to Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and assured him of all help from the Centre to deal with the situation.

Toll in Muzaffarnagar violence climbs to 38, curfew continues

MUZAFFARNAGAR/LUCKNOW: today remained in force in riot-hit areas of Muzaffarnagar with the army patrolling troubled places as the death toll in the clashes in the district and adjoining towns rose to 38.
Over 360 people have been arrested in connection with the violence. "A total of 38 people have died in various districts of western Uttar Pradesh with 32 deaths in Muzaffarnagar", Home Secretary Kamal Saxena said in Lucknow. While two deaths have been reported from Meerut, one each has been reported from Hapur, Baghpat, Saharapur and Shamli, he said, adding that 81 people have been injured in these districts and 366 people have been arrested.

The Home Secretary said no fresh incident has been reported and the situation was under control.
Curfew in three police station areas of Muzaffarnagar -- Civil Lines, Kotwali and Nai Mandi -- was continuing and army was patrolling the troubled areas in Muzaffarnagar, Shamli and Meerut, Saxena said. Prohibitory orders are being enforced strictly and a strict watch is being maintained on mischievous elements. FIRs were yesterday registered against BJP legislative party leader Hukum Singh, MLAs Suresh Rana, Bhartendu, Sangeet Som and former Congress MP Harendra Malik among others for violating prohibitory orders and some of the senior leaders who tried to go to Muzaffarnagar, including union minister Ajit Singh. The injured are undergoing

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have invited applications for the Joint Admission Test (JAM) to be held on February 9 across the country for admission to M.Sc., Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D., M.Sc.-Ph.D. dual-degree and other post-Bachelor’s degree programmes. The IITs, Madras, Delhi, Bombay, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee, Bhubaneswar, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad and Indore, conduct these programmes. Admission to integrated Ph.D. programmes in Physical, Chemical, Biological and Mathematical Sciences of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, is done through JAM.

The test centres include Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Mangalore, Tiruchirapalli, Coimbatore, Goa, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Madurai, Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Pune and Kolkata. The IIT, Kanpur, is organising the test.
The three-hour JAM is held in Biological Sciences, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics and Physics. A candidate can appear for a paper or two.All questions for Biological Sciences and Biotechnology will be of objective type and others, objective-cum-subjective. The test will be held from 9 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The application fee for women, the physically challenged and those belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes is Rs. 750 for one paper and Rs. 1,050 for two. Men have to pay Rs. 1,500 and Rs. 2,100, respectively. Bank charges should be paid. The fee can be paid through Net banking or challan. The payment should be made to the account of Chairman, JAM, State Bank of India, IIT Kanpur Branch, A/C No. 30733644428 and IFSC Code: SBIN0001161.

The online application portal http://gate.iitk.ac.in/jam will be open for registration from September 16 to October 16. The applicants have to fill their personal data online, which can be updated or modified until the payment of fee. The last date for payment of fee is October 12. After the payment, the applicant should take a printout of the online registration form latest by October 16, affix a photograph and signature and send it to the Chairperson of JAM 2014 of the IIT, Kanpur, by registered post, along with copies of documents, so as to reach the addressee on or before October 23. The results will be announced at 5 p.m. on April 16. Those who qualify in the test may apply specifying their preferences for the programmes to the IIT, Kanpur. For admission to the integrated Ph.D. course at the IISc and the M.Sc.- Ph.D. dual-degree programmes at the IITs, Bombay and Kanpur, visit the admission websites of the respective institutes.
