Nilam claims 11 lives, heavy rainfall expected during next 12 hours

CHENNAI: Cyclone Nilam has so far claimed lives of eight people in Tamil Nadu and three in Andhra Pradesh.

The devastating storm swept across north Tamil Nadu coast near Mahabalipuram.

Heavy rains all through the night due to the depression had thrown life out of gear in the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

Continuous rainfall has already caused flooding in several parts of the district as people brace for the storm that is likely to cause extensive damage by destroying standing crops and temporary housing settlements.

Chennai recorded the maximum speed of cyclone 75 km per hour during the time of the landfall on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the cyclone also pushed the Prathiba Kavery ship from Mumbai to the shore near Elliots Beach. Seventeen people were rescued from the ship.

Authorities said that six people were missing and two were dead. More than 200 electric posts were destroyed when the cyclone hit the land in various places.

The director of cyclone warning centre of the Indian meteorological department, Chennai, S R Ramanan, said that the Cyclone Nilam is expected to decline slowly.

Authorities had deployed relief and rescue teams across the country’s southern states to combat the destruction expected from the storm.

“The cyclone Nilam started crossing near Mahabalipuram at 16.30 IST. Now it is expected to move in the west direction.

Because of its movement in the land it is likely to weaken gradually. The rainfall itself may shift northwards,” said Ramanan.

Strong winds measuring above 50 km/hour could be seen tilting trees of palm and coconut planted alongside the coast and residential areas.

Qatar Airways to pay flier Rs 80,000 for loss of luggage

NEW DELHI: Qatar Airways has been directed by a district consumer forum here to pay Rs 80,005 to a flier for loss of his luggage in transit from Delhi to Milan.

The East District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum said that Qatar Airways is liable to reimburse Delhi resident Manish Raj Bhardwaj for loss as his baggage was lost due to negligence of the airline's handling staff.

"The affidavit filed by the complainant (Bhardwaj) is uncontested. In these circumstances, it is to be accepted that the value of the lost baggage was Rs 60,005 and the offer made by respondent (airline) of Rs 5,525 was not justified. The goods were lost due to negligence on the part of handling staff of the respondent. As such they cannot escape from their liability of reimbursing the amount of loss...

"It has also been contented by complainant that articles lost were of prime importance for his visit and he could not show them to prospective clients. He suffered not only loss of goods but also loss of opportunities which cannot be evaluated in terms of money," the bench presided by N A Zaidi said.

The forum directed the airline to pay Bhardwaj Rs 60,005 as the value of the lost goods and compensation of Rs 20,000 which included the cost of litigation.

Bhardwaj's grievance, according to his complaint, had been that not only did the airline lose his luggage but it offered a paltry sum of Rs 5,525 to him as compensation.

He had said in his complaint that he had travelled to Milan from Delhi via Doha on December 19, 2010 and when he had arrived there on the next day he was informed that two pieces of his luggage were missing.

He had lodged a 'property irregularity report' with the airline on December 20, 2010 at Milan and had reported loss of items worth Rs 60,005, giving all the details, he had said.

Non-subsidised LPG price hiked by Rs 26.50 per cylinder

NEW DELHI: The price of non-subsidised cooking gas (LPG), which consumers buy beyond the cheaper quota of six cylinders, was on Thursday hiked by Rs 26.50 to Rs 922 per unit on firming international rates.
The 14.2-kg cooking gas cylinder that consumers buy beyond their entitled six bottles at subsidised rates, will now cost Rs 922, up from Rs 895.50 in Delhi, according to Indian Oil Corp, the nation’s largest fuel retailer.
The government had in September restricted the supply of subsidised domestic LPG cylinders to six per household in a year.
Any requirement above this will have to be bought at market rate, which is more than double the subsidised price of Rs 410.42 per cylinder in Delhi.
State-owned oil firms revise rates of non-subsidised LPG on first of every month based on the average imported cost and rupee-US dollar rate during the previous month.
There is no restriction on the number of non-subsidised cylinders that a consumer buys beyond the six subsidised bottles.
The price of commercial 14.2-kg LPG cylinder in Delhi will be Rs 1,105.5, while that of a 19-kg bottle would be Rs 1,551.
A commercial or non-domestic cylinder was previously priced at Rs 1,075 per 14.2-kg bottle. Similarly, the 19-kg cylinder was priced at Rs 1,536.5.

Rates of non-subsidised 14.2-kg cylinder and those of commercial bottles of the same size differ because the government has granted exemption from customs and excise duty on non-subsidised LPG cylinders only for domestic consumption to reduce the price burden on the common man.
