Major theft in jewellery in Kozhikdoe, Gold worth 20 lakh stolen

Kozhikode: A jewellery was looted and gold and silver worth Rs 20 lakh was looted on early morning Friday. The theft was occurred in Sulthana Jewellery in Palayam. City police commissioner G Sparjan Kumar visited the jewellery. The theft was known when the employees came to open the shop on Friday morning. Police said the theft might have occurred by 3 am.

Hajj applications forms available from Feb 6

Kondotty: Application forms for the annual Haj pilgrimage will be available through the Kerala State Haj Committee from February 6. Last date for submitting applications is March 20. 

Haj application forms will remain available in Karippur haj house, collectorates, wakf board office, coaching centers of minority welfare boards for free. . Haj application forms can also be downloaded from the committee's website www.hujjcommitteeofindia.com . It has been made mandatory to attach passport valid up to minimum March 31, 2014 with Haj application form.. At the time of submitting applications to the passport office, the applicants must make it clear that this passport is being sought for undertaking Haj pilgrimage
The application fee is Rs 300 .

Over 5.9 mn jobless in Spain

Madrid:Spain's unemployment rate hit 26.02 percent in 2012, with more than 5.9 million people jobless, the Spanish National Statistics Institute, or INE, said Thursday.

A total of 187,300 people were added to jobless rolls in the fourth quarter of last year, the INE said in its Labour Force Survey.

This is the first time that Spain's unemployment rate has exceeded 26 percent, and the country is close to having 6 million people out of work.

Employment fell by 363,300 in the fourth quarter of 2012 alone, the INE said.

The unemployment rate for foreign-born workers hit 36.53 percent, with more than 1.2 million people in this segment of the labour force out of work.

More than 2.7 million people in Spain's labour force have been out of work for over a year, the INE said.

The service sector lost the most jobs in 2012, followed by construction, manufacturing and agriculture.

Spain has been mired in a deep recession since 2008 due to the financial crisis caused by the bursting of the real estate bubble.

M.M. Mani reinstated to CPI (M) State Committee

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: After 6 months’ suspension from CPI (M) for his controversial speech on listed killings, former CPI (M) Idukki District Secretary was on Thursday reinstated to the party’s State Committee. The suspension term ends on Friday. Mani delivered his controversial speech on May 26 in which he said his party used to brutally murder its political adversaries on the basis of prepared hit-lists. Mani’s statement, coming just 22 days after the brutal killing of rebel Marxist leader TP Chandrasekharan in Kozhikode district, had caused huge embarrassment for the CPI (M), effectively confirming the allegation that it was a party of murderers. Following this, Mani was removed as secretary of the Idukki district committee. He was suspended from the party’s State Committee for six months on July 25, 2012. Presently, Mani is on bail in Anchery Baby murder case.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a flip-flop over its hot pursuit of hitech thief Devinder Singh alias "Bunty chor", Kerala police Thursday said they are yet to get a confirmation from Karnataka of the arrest of the Delhi-based burglar. Devinder had fled the Kerala capital in a luxury car stolen from an NRI's residence in the city on January 21. Based on information that Devinder fell into police net near Hosur on Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border last night, a police team left for Bangalore to initiate legal formalities securing his custody. Though the reports in this regard had initially been corroborated by Kerala Home Minister Thiruvanchur Radhakrishnan, he later said the state was yet to receive an official communication from Karnataka about the arrest. Wanted in connection with scores of cases across the country, Devinder gained entry to the NRI's house here by breaking its hitech security systems like surveillance camera and intruder warning alarm.
