KOCHI: A motor vehicle strike has been announced in the state on Wednesday in protest against the sharp increase in petrol prices. The strike was called by the Motor Workers' Trade Union Co-ordination Committee at a meeting convened in Ernakulam. Private buses will also partake in the strike. The oil companies have hiked the price of petrol by Rs 2.35 per litre and diesel by 50 ps on Saturday night. Union Petroleum Minister Veerappa Moily wanted to hike the price of diesel by Rs 5/litre.

Woman raped in Pune hospital; ward boy, guard arrested

 PUNE: In a shocking incident, a mentally challenged woman was allegedly raped by a ward boy and a security guard in the lift of a municipal hospital at Bhosari near here, police said Monday. Both the accused have been arrested. The 30-year-old woman, who is also speech impaired, had been admitted to the hospital from a shelter home where she lived, following health complaints on August 26. The accused allegedly took the woman to the lift on the pretext of shifting her to another ward and raped her on August 29, police said. After being discharged from the hospital on August 31, the woman returned to the shelter home where she informed about the crime to the caretaker through sign language. Following this, a case was filed leading to the arrests, police added.

Indian woman flees Oman after swindling $10m from investors

DUBAI: An Indian woman has allegedly duped a number of Indian investors to the tune of USD 10 million in Oman and fled the country, according to a report. According to the victims, the swindler lured them by showing forged ministry papers claiming to be the in-charge of several projects, the Times of Oman reported. "She lured us into the trap. She even produced forged papers claiming she was responsible for executing many projects. She wanted money and offered us interest. Trusting her, we gave her money after taking cheques," said an investor, who has lost 350,000 rials. "She used to pay us interest in the beginning but after a few months she defaulted on payments. When we tried to enquire about her antecedents, she had already vanished," he said. The victims said the woman fled Oman in May with at least USD 10.3 million (4 million Omani rials) and is said to "enjoying life" in Mangalore. Victims of the fraud say the woman has duped several people and details now available with them prove that over 4 million rials were siphoned off within months. "She used to visit the church and school meetings regularly to widen her network. By visiting these places regularly, she gained our confidence. We never thought that she will run away with our hard earned money," wife of one investor said. The couple has registered a case with the police and approached the court too. "In one case, the court has given a verdict in our favor. We are now planning to file more cases. We want the authorities to nab her, retrieve our money and send her behind the bars," the investor was quoted by the newspaper as saying. Another investor who lost 78,000 is looking at the options available through the local police. "We have moved the court. We are planning to file more cases. We are also talking with our lawyers for options to seeking Interpol's help as she has left Oman," he said.

No decision on shutting petrol pumps at night: Moily

New Delhi : Amidst a storm over proposal to shut petrol pumps during night to taper fuel demand, Oil Minister M Veerappa Moily today said the government had not made any such proposal and the idea had come from public. 'It is not our idea. It is an idea which is coming from public and others. No decision has been taken to keep petrol pumps dry during any part of the day,' he told reporters. His ministry plans to launch a massive fuel conservation drive from September 16 to cut fuel demand by 3 per cent and save an estimated Rs 16,000 crore or USD 2.5 billion in forex outgo.

'We are toying with the ideas (on conserving fuel) that have come to us. That doesn't mean we have accepted them or are enforcing shutdowns,' he said.
Moily said before the planned launch of September 16 campaign, several proposals to save cut fuel consumptions have come to the government and as per usual practice are being mulled over by his ministry. 'It is incorrect to say that any decision on shutting petrol pumps has been taken,' he added.
