Filmmaker Ravi Chopra dead at 68

Mumbai: Filmmaker Ravi Chopra, who was suffering from severe lung ailment, died here Wednesday at 3.30 p.m. He will be cremated at Pawan Hans, Vile Parle Thursday. He was 68.

The late filmmaker was hospitalised Nov 6 at Breach Candy hospital.

However, a source close to the family confirmed his death Wednesday, saying: 'He passed away today (Wednesday) at around 3.30 p.m.'

His funeral will take place at 11.00 a.m. at Pawan Hans Thursday and many celebrities are expected at the ceremony.

Ravi Chopra is survived by his wife and three children.

Bollywood is in deep shock on the loss and expressed their grief on the demise of the filmmaker.

While filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar was 'Saddened to hear about the demise', director Farah Khan remembered him as 'One of the nicest, kindest and big hearted soul in the film industry'.

Actress and politician Smriti Irani says she 'was blessed to work with him' and expressed her 'condolences to his loved ones'.

Actress Divya Dutta too was in shock.

'I just got the news. It's certainly very sad news and a huge loss for this industry. He was one man who was full of life. For me, working with him in 'Baghban' was like a picnic. He never used to get sad or stressed over anything,' she said.

Ravi Chopra's career as an associate producer began with hit film 'Insaf Ka Tarazu' followed by 'Nikaah' and 'Awam'. However, his debut as a director happened with film 'Zameer'. On TV, he directed epic dramas like'Mahabharat' and 'Ramayan'.

Son of legendary producer and director late B.R. Chopra and the nephew of late Yash Chopra, he is remembered for his soulful storytelling in films like 'The Burning Train', 'Aaj Ki Awaz', and 'Baabul', among others.

Sunanda's belongings found missing from hotel room: police

New Delhi: The bag and footwear used by Sunanda Pushkar, wife of former minister Sashi Tharoor, have been found missing from the hotel room in which she was found dead, police said here on Thursday.

A team of Delhi police had searched the room. Quoting them, media reports say the clothes worn by Sunanda were also missing. Only police could found a bag in which her tablets were kept.

Police suspect that somebody might have intentionally removed the bag, clothes and footwear from the room. In this connection, police conducted inquiries with hotel staff and recorded their statements.

Sunanda was found dead suite no 345 of Leela Palace hotel on January 17 this year. 

Government hikes excise duty on diesel and petrol

 New Delhi: India has raised excise duty on petrol and diesel to boost revenues and contain budget borrowing that could put off a likely cut in the retail prices of the two fuels.

The government has raised the factory gate tax by 1.50 rupees a litre each for the two fuels.

Sensex touches record high; Nifty crosses 8,400-mark

Mumbai: A benchmark index of Indian equities markets Wednesday touched a record high of 28,126.48 points, surpassing its previous high of 28,027.96 points touched Nov 10.

Good buying was observed in banking and auto sectors, while marginal selling pressure was seen in metal sector.

The 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 27,958.64 points, was trading at 28,043.87 points (at 12.09 p.m.), up 133.81 points or 0.48 percent from the previous day's close at 27,910.06 points.

The Sensex touched a high of 28,126.48 points and a low of 27,958.64 points in the trade so far.

The S&P auto index gained 281.05 points and bankex went up by 213.43 points; while metal index dropped by 35.62 points.

The wider 50-scrip Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) was also trading at 31.60 points or 0.38 percent up at 8,394.25 points after hitting record high of 8,415.05 earlier in the day.

Sunanda Pushkar case: Laptop, phones sent for forensic probe

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police has questioned some key witnesses besides sending three mobile phones and a laptop for advance forensic investigations in the mysterious death of Sunanda Pushkar.

The bed sheet, carpet on which fluid marks were found and broken glass, which were recently recovered from suite number 345 of Leela Palace Hotel, where Pushkar, wife of former Union minister Shashi Tharoor, was found dead, has also been sent to forensic labs for examination.

The room where Pushkar was found dead under mysterious circumstances on January 17, was recently revisited by police and forensic experts. The suite of the five star hotel, had remained sealed and was opened for the first time since the incident.

According to senior police officials, the three phones and laptop have been sent to check whether anything was deleted from the device after Pushkar's death.

Police had also got information regarding Pushkar's twin email accounts from Yahoo and Google with details of whom she was in touch during her last days.

A list of these people through their IP addresses was made by the police and they were quizzed about the conversations.

Their statements will now be tallied with each other and also with those which were recorded before the SDM during the initial investigation.

The investigations were initiated after AIIMS medical board in its second report confirmed poisoning as the reason behind her death which has been their earlier stand too, but said that the details of the crime scene was not shared with them.

The doctors have not specified the kind of poison and how it reached Pushkar's body.

The panel had also advised police to get the bed sheet and pillow of the dead forensically tested.

The medical board concluded that Pushkar's vital organs like kidney, lungs and liver were functioning normally and that her death was caused by poisoning.

Delhi Police commissioner B S Bassi had said the fresh reports submitted to them were "inconclusive" and "based on conjecture".

As the accused are juveniles, investigation is done secretly. Police said the minor was abused by two boys of tenth standard after taking her to the hostel. The girl told police that she will be able to identify the boys.
