Indian Railways Scheme: Convert Your Waitlisted Train Ticket Into an Airline Ticket

________ A to Z kerala .......... [kvk] [www.atozkerala.in , www.atozkerala.blogspot.com]
New Delhi: In some good news, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is offering passengers who fail to get their waitlisted ticket confirmed an option to convert it into an airline ticket at a competitive fare.

The Railway PSU has already tied-up with budget carrier GoAir and have sold about 100 tickets through this scheme in the past one month.

'We have also entered into an understanding with SpiceJet under the scheme and plan to rope in other domestic carriers too,' said IRCTC spokesperson Sandip Dutta.

However, the scheme applies to tickets booked at least three days prior to the date of the journey. The flight tickets would be made available only for the day of the train journey or a day after that.

IRCTC would be sending e-mails to waitlisted passengers who seek to avail the benefit under the scheme.

Passengers booking train tickets right from sleeper class to AC classes can avail the facility, Mr Dutta said.

'For such passengers, the airline ticket would be competitively priced and cheaper by as much as 30-40 per cent,' he said.

The airlines would be placing their unsold tickets with IRCTC, a move that not only promises a boon for the domestic carriers but an added option for the passengers in reaching their destination without having to abort their trip.

With an average seat factor of about 70 to 75 per cent, most of the domestic airlines fly with about 20 per cent seats empty in their plane and IRCTC plans to make the best use of it. PTI

Turkey ruling party loses majority

________ A to Z kerala .......... [kvk] [www.atozkerala.in , www.atozkerala.blogspot.com]
ISTANBUL: Turkey's Islamic-rooted ruling party has lost its parliamentary majority in legislative elections, dealing a severe blow to strongman President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ambition to expand his powers.

The Justice and Development Party (AKP) won the biggest share of the vote in the closely-fought elections yesterday, but lost almost 10 per cent on the nearly 50 per cent it recorded in the previous 2011 polls.

Under Turkey's proportional representation system, this means the AKP will need to form a coalition for the first time since coming to power in 2002.

In another sensational result that shakes-up Turkey's political landscape, the pro-Kurdish People's Democratic Party (HDP) easily surpassed the 10-per cent barrier needed to send MPs to parliament.

Official results based on 99.9 per cent of votes counted gave the AKP 41 percent of yesterday's ballots, followed by the Republican People's Party (CHP) on 25 per cent, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) on 16.5 per cent and the HDP in fourth place with 13 per cent.

According to the official projections, the AKP will have 258 seats in the 550-seat parliament, the CHP 132, the MHP 81 and the HDP 79.

The AKP has dominated Turkish politics since it first came to power in 2002 but has suffered from a dip in economic growth and controversy over Erdogan's perceived authoritarian tendencies.

The results wreck Erdogan's dream of agreeing a new constitution to switch Turkey from a parliamentary to a presidential system that he had made a fundamental issue in the campaign.

Such a change would have required a two-thirds majority in the parliament.
Erdogan - premier from 2003-2014 before becoming president - wanted to be enshrined as Turkey's most powerful figure and strengthen the office of the presidency which was largely ceremonial until his arrival.

Opponents, however, feared it could mark the start of one-man rule, with Erdogan likely to seek another presidential mandate to stay in power until 2024.

Pak holds polls in Gilgit-Baltistan despite India's objections

________ A to Z kerala .......... [kvk] [www.atozkerala.in , www.atozkerala.blogspot.com]
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan today went ahead with the holding of legislative assembly elections in Gilgit-Baltistan despite India's objections to the polls.

It is the second time Pakistan is holding polls to elect a regional legislature after devolution of powers in 2009 which changed the region's name from Northern Areas to Gilgit-Baltistan and provided it with a local assembly.

Reacting strongly to the elections in Gilgit-Baltistan, India last week had said it is an attempt by Pakistan to "camouflage its forcible and illegal occupation" of the regions which are integral part of the country.

Official Spokesperson in the External Affairs Ministry Vikas Swarup in New Delhi had expressed concern at the "continued efforts" by Pakistan to deny the people of the region their political rights and to absorb these territories. But Pakistan had rejected India's stand and said India should avoid "interference" in its internal affairs.

The polling for the 24 seats of the legislative assembly started at 8AM (local time) this morning. According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), there are about 618,364 registered voters including 288,889 women, who are expected to exercise their franchise.
Six members of the assembly will be elected from Skardu district, four from Diamer, three each from Gilgit, Hunza Nagar, Ghizer and Ganche and two from Astor.

In all, 1,143 polling stations have been set up, including 282 declared as "highly sensitive" and 269 as "sensitive" due to the security situation. A total of 272 candidates are contesting the elections with all major parties, including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's PML-N, Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan People's Party (PPP) in the poll fray.

Pakistan's former military ruler Pervez Musharraf's All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) is also in the run and has fielded 13 candidates. Other known parties contesting the polls are Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT), Majils Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM), Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam- Fazl (JUI-F), Tehreek-e-Islami and Jamaat-i- Islami (JI).

Pakistan on Saturday had deployed army in the region to maintain "peace and security" ahead of the polls. Stringent security arrangements were put in place at all polling stations and at key entry and exit point of the region. Gilgit-Baltistan is strategically located and provides the only land link with China. The USD 46 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor is also proposed to pass through it, which India has objected to.

Islamabad: At least 19 terrorists and seven soldiers were killed on Monday in suicide attack and the ensuing gun battle between security forces and militants in North Waziristan along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relation (ISPR), the intense exchange of gunfire took place in an uncleared pocket in North Waziristan along the Afghan border, Geo News reported.

Security forces chased and cordoned off the militants when one of them detonated his suicide jacket, an ISPR spokesperson said.

Seven soldiers, including five officials, were killed in the explosion, he said.

FSSAI orders testing of GSK, ITC fast food brands

________ A to Z kerala .......... [kvk] [www.atozkerala.in , www.atozkerala.blogspot.com]
ew Delhi : Central food safety regulator FSSAI today ordered testing of various noodles, pasta and macaroni brands, including Top Ramen, Foodles and Wai Wai, manufactured by seven companies to check compliance of norms in the wake of
Maggi controversy.

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has also asked for testing of four variants of 'Maggi Nutilicious
Pazzta with tastemakers'.

'Various test results on Maggi and some other similar products have raised serious health concerns. In view of the
same, it would be advisable to draw regulatory samples for similar products for which product approvals have been granted
by the FSSAI...These samples should be sent to the authorised labs for testing,' FSSAI CEO YS Malik said in letter to
Commissioners of Food Safety in all states and UTs.

As per FSSAI order, the companies whose products have been listed for testing are Nestle India, ITC, Indo Nissin Food
Ltd, GSK Consumer Helathcare, CG Foods India, Ruchi International and AA Nutrition Ltd.

The regulator has ordered the testing of products registered with it.

The products include Wai Wai noodles and bhujiya chicken snacks by CG Foods; Koka instant noodles from Ruchi
International, Foodles by GSK Consumer Helathcare and Nestle's Maggi instant noodles with nine variants.

Others in the list are Indo Nissin's Top Ramen Aata Masala, ITC's three variants of instant noodles and Yummy
chicken and vegetarian noodles of AA Nutrition.

When contacted CG Foods CEO GP Sah said: 'Our brands meets all regulatory standards as listed by Food Safety and Standard Authority of India. We are not closed to any tests and will cooperate with authorities if required.'

Comments from other companies could not be obtained immediately.

The development comes after the Indian unit of the Swiss multinational recalled Maggi from the markets after several
states banned the famous '2-minute' instant food brand as tests showed them containing taste enhancer MSG (Mono Sodium
Glutamate) and lead in excess of the permissible limits.

Meanwhile, FSSAI on Friday banned all variants of Maggi noodles terming them as 'unsafe and hazardous' for human
consumption. PTI

Amazon, Google race to get your DNA into the cloud

________ A to Z kerala .......... [kvk] [www.atozkerala.in , www.atozkerala.blogspot.com]
Amazon.com Inc and Google Inc are to store data on human DNA in the cloud, seeking both bragging rights in helping scientists make new medical discoveries and market share in a business that may be worth $1 billion a year by 2018.

Academic institutions and healthcare companies are picking sides between their cloud computing offerings - Google Genomics or Amazon Web Services - spurring the two to one-up each other as they win high-profile genomics business, according to interviews with researchers, industry consultants and analysts.

That growth is being propelled by, among other forces, the push for personalized medicine, which aims to base treatments on a patient's DNA profile. Making that a reality will require enormous quantities of data to reveal how particular genetic profiles respond to different treatments.

Already, universities and drug manufacturers are embarking on projects to sequence the genomes of hundreds of thousands of people.
The human genome is the full complement of DNA, or genetic material, a copy of which is found in nearly every cell of the body.

Clients view Google and Amazon as doing a better job storing genomics data than they can do using their own computers, keeping it secure, controlling costs and allowing it to be easily shared.

The cloud companies are going beyond storage to offer analytical functions that let scientists make sense of DNA data. Microsoft Corp and International Business Machines are also competing for a slice of the market. The 'cloud' refers to data or software that physically resides in a server and is accessible via the internet, which allows users to access it without downloading it to their own computer.

Now an estimated $100 million to $300 million business globally, the cloud genomics market is expected to grow to $1 billion by 2018, said research analyst Daniel Ives of investment bank FBR Capital. By that time, the entire cloud market should have $50 billion to $75 billion in annual revenue, up from about $30 billion now.

'The cloud is the entire future of this field,' Craig Venter, who led a private effort to sequence the human genome in the 1990s, said in an interview. His new company, San Diego-based Human Longevity Inc, recently tried to import genomic data from servers at the J. Craig Venter Institute in Rockville, Maryland.

The transmission was so slow, scientists had to resort to sending disks and thumb drives by FedEx and human messengers, or 'sneakernet,' he said. The company now uses Amazon Web Services.

So does a collaboration between Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc and Pennsylvania-based Geisinger Health Systems to sequence 250,000 genomes. Raw DNA data is uploaded to Amazon's cloud, where software from privately-held DNAnexus assembles the millions of chunks into the full, 3-billion-letter long genome.

DNAnexus's algorithms then determine where an individual genome differs from the 'reference' human genome, the company's chief scientist Dr. David Shaywitz said, in hopes of identifying new drug targets.

Hosting for free

Showing how important Google and Amazon view this business, and how they hope to use existing customers to lure future ones, each is hosting well-known genomics datasets for free.

Neither company discloses the amount of genomics data it holds, but based on interviews with analysts and genomic scientists, as well as the companies' own announcements of what customers they've won, Amazon Web Services may be bigger.

Data from the '1000 Genomes Project,' an international public-private effort that identified genetic variations found in at least 1 percent of humans, reside at both Amazon and Google 'without charge,' said Kathy Cravedi of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), one of the project's sponsors.

Other paying clients with a more specific focus are picking sides.

Google, for instance, won a project from the Autism Speaks foundation to collect and analyze the genomes of 10,000 affected children and their parents for clues to the genetic basis of autism.

Another customer is Tute Genomics, whose database of 8.5 billion human DNA variants can be searched for how frequently any given variant appears, what traits it's associated with and how people with a certain variant respond to particular drugs.

Amazon is hosting the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation's project to collect complete-genome sequences and other data from 1,000 patients to identify new drug targets. It also won the Alzheimer's Disease Sequencing Project, which has similar aims.

Amazon charges about $4 to $5 a month to store one full human genome, and Google about $3 to $5 a month. The companies also charge for data transfers or computing time, as when scientists run analytical software on stored data.

Amazon's database-analysis tool, Redshift, costs 25 cents an hour or $1,000 per terabyte per year, the company said. A terabyte is 1 trillion bytes, or 1,000 gigabytes, about enough to hold 300 hours of high-quality video.

Genetic gold

Another part of the cloud services' pitch to would-be customers is that their analytic tools can fish out genetic gold - a drug target, say, or a DNA variant that strongly predicts disease risk - from a sea of data. Any discoveries made through such searches belong to the owners of the data.

'On the local university server it might take months to run a computationally-intense' analysis, said Alzheimer's project leader Dr. Gerard Schellenberg of the University of Pennsylvania. 'On Amazon, it's, 'how fast do you need it done?', and they do it.'

Another selling point is security. Universities are 'generally pretty porous,' said Ryan Permeh, chief scientist at cybersecurity company Cylance Inc, of Irvine, California, and the security of federal government computers is 'not at the top of the class.'

While academic and pharmaceutical research projects are the biggest customers for genomics cloud services, they will be overtaken by clinical applications in the next 10 years, said Google Genomics director of engineering David Glazer.

Individual doctors will regularly access a cloud service to understand how a patient's genetic profile affects his risk of various diseases or his likely response to medication.

'We are at that transition point now,' Glazer said.

Matt Wood, general manager for Data Science at Amazon Web Services, sees cloud demand in genomics now as 'a perfect storm,' as the amount of data being created, the need for collaboration and the move of genomics into clinical care accelerate.

Experts on DNA and data say without access to the cloud, modern genomics would grind to a halt.

Bioinformatics expert Dr. Atul Butte of the University of California, San Francisco, said that now, when researchers at different universities are jointly working on NIH and other genomic data, they don't have to figure out how to make their computers talk to each other. In March, NIH cleared the way for major research on the cloud when it began allowing scientists to upload important genomic data.

'My response was, it's about time,' Butte said.

Mangalyaan' mission to enter 15-day 'blackout' phase Monday

________ A to Z kerala .......... [kvk] [www.atozkerala.in , www.atozkerala.blogspot.com]

Bengaluru: Starting tomorrow, the country's low-cost Mars mission that is in a rendezvous with the red planet for an extended period will enter the 'blackout' phase snapping communication with the satellite.

From June 8 to 22, the sun will block Mars from the earth snapping communication with the satellite.

MOM during this period will go into an 'autonomous mode' and will take its decisions, a senior Indian Space Research
Organisation official told PTI.

'This will be for the first time that there will be a communication break for such a long period of about 15 days.
During this period, there will not be any communication with the satellite,' he said.

Expressing confidence about regaining control over the satellite once the blackout phase is over, he said, 'the
scenario has been tested for earlier; line of communication will be established.'

The spacecraft's life was extended for another six months in March due to surplus fuel.

Stating that the spacecraft has been 'configured' for the blackout, the ISRO official said, 'we are not sending any
commands to the spacecraft now, till 8th (June) few hours of signals will be sent by the spacecraft-that will be for about
two to three hours per day.'

In May next year, the mission will have to go through a similar phase once again, if there is another extension of
mission life when the Earth will come between the Sun and Mars.

Scripting space history, India on September 24 last successfully placed its low-cost Mars spacecraft in orbit
around the red planet in its very first attempt, breaking into an elite club of three countries.

The ISRO spacecraft was launched on its nine-month-long odyssey on a homegrown PSLV rocket from Sriharikota in Andhra
Pradesh on November 5, 2013 and had escaped the earth's gravitational field on December 1, 2013. PTI

First photos of Britain's Princess Charlotte show kiss from little brother

________ A to Z kerala .......... [kvk] [www.atozkerala.in , www.atozkerala.blogspot.com]

The first photos of Britain's Princess Charlotte together with Prince George, who is pictured giving his baby sister a kiss, were released by Kensington Palace on Saturday.

The four photographs, taken by their mother Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, show 21-month old George sitting on a sofa holding Charlotte. The portraits were taken when Charlotte, born on May 2, was around two weeks old.

They were taken at Anmer Hall, Prince William and his wife Kate's country mansion, on his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II's private Sandringham estate in Norfolk, eastern England.

Propped up by two white cushions, Charlotte appears to be wearing a white romper suit with a matching jumper. Her brother is dressed in a white shirt with blue piping detail around the collar, cuffs and front, and matching blue socks and shorts.

One picture shows George planting a kiss on his sister's forehead, another shows him tenderly looking down at her, a third shows him looking up and a fourth shows him smiling.

'Prince George and Princess Charlotte together at home #WelcomeToTheFamily,' Kensington Palace, William and Kate's official residence in London, said as they released the image on social media.

'We're delighted to share the first photo of Prince George with his little sister Princess Charlotte. The photo of Prince George and Princess Charlotte was taken by The Duchess of Cambridge in mid-May,' they said.

Pictures of George have been rare. Only a handful of sets have been released, while he has rarely been seen in public.

The first pictures released of George at home after his birth were taken by Kate's father Michael Middleton.

George, who is directly in line to inherit the throne after his grandfather Prince Charles and then William, was last seen when his father took him to hospital to see his newborn sister.

Earlier, Kensington Palace released pictures of the multitudes of gifts, cards and toys the family received after Charlotte's birth, sent from all around the world.

They showed bundles of mail stacked up on filing cabinets, knitted dolls, slippers and bonnets and hand-written cards from schoolchildren.

'Thank you to everyone who took the time to make handmade gifts,' the palace said.

It was announced on Friday that Charlotte will be christened on July 5 at St Mary Magdalene Church, Sandringham, where William's late mother Diana was baptised.

Charlotte will be christened as a member of the Church of England by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, spiritual leader of the Anglican Church.

William and Kate have been staying at Anmer Hall in Sandringham since Charlotte's birth at St Mary's Hospital in London.

In tribute to his grandmother and mother, William and Kate gave Charlotte the middle names Elizabeth and Diana.

The princess is fourth in line to the throne after her brother Prince George, who was born on July 22, 2013. He was baptised at St James's Palace in London.AFP

Nestle India spent Rs 19 cr for quality testing; Rs 445 cr on ads

________ A to Z kerala .......... [kvk] [www.atozkerala.in , www.atozkerala.blogspot.com]
New Delhi: In the dock over alleged lapses of food safety standards in its famousMagginoodles, Nestle India has disclosed having spent Rs 445 core on 'advertising and sales promotion' last year, while the expenses towards 'quality testing' was less than 5 per cent of such amounts.

Similar has been the trend over the last five years, when the 'advertising and sales promotion' expenses ranged between Rs 300-450 crore annually, while expenditure on 'laboratory or quality testing' moved between Rs 12-20 crore.
An analysis of the annual financial accounts of the Indian arm of the Swiss multinational giant Nestle shows that the expenses towards employees have risen the most in the last five years, up by about 75 per cent from Rs 433 crore in the year 2010 to Rs 755 crore in 2014.

The company follows a financial year ending December 31. In comparison, the advertising and sales promotion expenses has risen by 47 per cent from Rs 302 crore in 2010 to Rs 445 crore in 2014. In the same period, the 'laboratory or quality testing' expenses rose by 45 per cent from Rs 13 crore to Rs 19 crore.

Experts, however, say that similar trend could be seen at other such companies as all of them spend huge sums on brand promotions.

The financial accounts of Nestle India further shows that the expenditure towards heads like 'travelling' and 'training' was higher than the same towards quality testing.

While travelling expenses has risen by 27 per cent from Rs 54 crore in 2010 to Rs 68 crore in 2014, the training expenditure rose by 51 per cent from Rs 25 crore to Rs 38 crore in the same period.

The expenditure towards 'market research' was however lower at about Rs 16 crore in 2014, up by about 69 per cent from Rs 9.7 crore five years ago in 2010.

While it insists that Maggi noodles are safe, Nestle India had to withdraw the product from the markets after many states banned the famous '2-minute' instant food after tests showed them containing taste enhancer MSG (Mono Sodium Glutamate) and lead in excess of permissible limits.

The central food safety regulator FSSAI has also ordered recall of all variants of Maggi noodles, terming them as 'unsafe and hazardous' for human consumption. Besides, FSSAI has also ordered recall of one variant 'Maggi Oats Noodles', which it said was being sold without a product approval and without undertaking the risk and safety assessment.

Incidentally, Nestle India Chairman A Helio Waszyk and Managing Director Etienne Benet wrote in their letter to shareholders, published in the latest annual report of the company, that 'Good Food, Good Life' is their mission. Stating that India was 'severely impacted by malnutrition,' they wrote that Nestle India was 'constantly researching and observing the role that food plays in the lives of consumers across the income pyramid.'

'Our vision and ambition is to be the recognised leader of Nutrition, Health and Wellness in India,' the letter said, while adding that Nestle India was 'focused on understanding the changing lifestyles, evolving needs, and dietary preferences of consumers'.

The Indian unit, they further said, relies on Nestle's extensive global R&D network and expertise 'to develop products that enable consumers to lead better lives and help them to improve nutrition in their daily diets'.

The company has also been criticised for lacking on the communication front, with experts saying that Nestle could have contained the damage if it had reacted swiftly when the first reports started coming in about the safety standards from Uttar Pradesh early last month.

Future Brands CEO Santosh Desai said there is a question mark now on the Maggi brand and there is a significant hit on the brand due to the controversy.

'There is a fundamental doubt due to safety issues. A lot will depend on how Nestle takes it forward,' he said, while adding that the road ahead will be a difficult one.

'If Nestle is able to establish testing by authorities were done in a different way, it could be less difficult. However, if it turns out in the tests that there were actually issues with Maggi, then it will be all the more difficult.'

'Either way, there is a serious hit to the brand. The company was slow to react and uncommunicative in initial days and when they came out with voluntary withdrawal of Maggi, it was a bit late. This is a company which is generally not communicative. They could have handle this better,' he added.

Desai, further said that there is a positive side for the company that Maggi is a brand which has had a long relationship with consumers.

'There are brands which are not missed by consumers but Maggi is a brand which had a lot of loyal consumers and people want this brand in their lives.'

Sounding optimistic, brand expert Harish Bijoor also said he thinks Maggi will come back.

'Companies invest in building brands and create a long enduring image. When events such as the one related to Maggi noodles happen, the brand suffers... However, I think Maggi will come back,' he said.

Bijoor is the CEO of Harish Bijoor Consults Inc. When asked about how difficult it could be for brand Maggi to make a come back, he said it is a matter of convincing the consumers with integrity.

'I don't believe it would be difficult for Maggi as it has been there in India for 32 years,' he added.

In their letter, Nestle India's Chairman and MD further said that the company has 'strong brands, a capable organisation, and immense trust and loyalty' of consumers.

'But as we move ahead in our journey we may need bold changes, swift adaptation and tough decisions, especially for evolving to a product portfolio that is more focused on premium and value-up ranges.'

'While doing this we will continue to protect our current business base and gear up to make the organisation more efficient to take on the current and future trade evolution and competitive challenges.'

'We are convinced that it is the winning strategy and will strengthen our ability to provide our consumers with Nutrition, Health and Wellness.' they wrote.

On Indian markets, the two wrote that there was 'inability to access or afford nutritious food is causing under-nutrition and related disorders'.

'It is also forecast that economic growth and related lifestyles changes will lead to over-nutrition related disorders such as obesity, and further aggravate the double burden of nutrition.'

'The increasing demand for food from a population striving for a better life is further compounded by population growth. The economy is struggling to ensure food and nutrition security even as the demand for food continues to grow and the land available for agriculture reduces,' the letter said.
