Google, Facebook and Twitter to remove online images of child abuse

________ A to Z kerala .......... [kvk] [www.atozkerala.in , www.atozkerala.blogspot.com]

LONDON: Google, Facebook and Twitter are to remove millions of online images of child sexual abuse after the internet giants joined forces with a British charity.

In the first scheme of its kind, anti-abuse campaigners from the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) are sharing lists of indecent images with the firms.

The aim is to quickly remove images of victims – identified by so-called “hash codes” – to prevent them from being repeatedly shared.

IWF workers search for child abuse images online and allocate them an individual hash code, akin to a digital fingerprint.

Campaigners reckon sharing the “Hash List” represents a “game changer” in the fight against online paedophilia.

The move will help prevent images of abuse from being uploaded to the internet in the first place, giving companies the power to stop people from sharing images on their services.

It will also protect people from accidentally stumbling across the images online.

But experts say that the Hash List will not block images found on the dark net, a restricted access network that hides users’ identities.

Creating a hash of a single image allows it to be "plucked" from the internet, like finding a needle in a haystack, the IWF said.

Lists will be shared with internet companies that provide services such as the uploading, storage or search of images, filtering or hosting services and social media and chat services.

Susie Hargreaves, chief executive of the IWF, said: "Our Hash List could be a game-changer and really steps up the fight against child sexual abuse images online.”

The NSPCC said the scheme shows internet firms are taking a "more proactive role" but warned there was more to be done to "strangle the life out of this sordid trade".

British Prime Minister David Cameron last year set up a new police unit to target “sickening” child abuse images being shared by paedophiles on the dark net.

Unchanged land law is major anti-growth barrier

________ A to Z kerala .......... [kvk] [www.atozkerala.in , www.atozkerala.blogspot.com]

By Amulya Ganguli
The Narendra Modi government has taken a giant leap backwards by failing to push ahead with the much-needed amendments to the land law.

Its decision to retain the original law means that it will take anything up to five years for an investor to buy a plot of land, as the Niti Aayog vice chairman, Arvind Panagariya, has pointed out.

The original law was, of course, the handiwork of the socialistic inclination of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, whose iron grip over the party and, as a result, over the Manmohan Singh government, enabled her to enact the supposedly pro-farmer and essentially anti-industries legislation.

Her hope was that populist initiatives like the land law and the food security act, which promised subsidized grains to 67 percent of the population, would ensure her party's victory in last year's general election.

In the event, the Congress put up its worst performance, which showed that the electorate was not fooled by the profligate welfare measure or the patently anti-development law.

Instead, the voters wanted someone to come to power who promised economic growth so that they would not be dependent on official charity or on policies which were expected to lead to more fragmentations of holdings by keeping farmers tied to their lands by complicating the process of sale and purchase.

There is little doubt that the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) success in getting an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha was entirely due to the popular expectation that Modi will vigorously pursue economic reforms. From this standpoint, the BJP's current retreat is a matter of huge disappointment as it is a setback to India's hope of becoming an economic powerhouse in the near future.

The Congress, and particularly its president and vice president, who spearheaded the campaign in favour of this regressive step, will be delighted since it will stymie Modi's 'Make in India' project by deterring foreign investment.

For Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, it is the first favourable turn of events for the Congress since its Lok Sabha tally dropped by as many as 165 seats since 2009 as they have succeeded in forcing Modi on to the back foot.

But it will be unfair to blame the Congress alone. The prime minister himself cannot be absolved of the guilt of mishandling a sensitive issue.

For a start, he rushed in when he should have been more circumspect. Perhaps, the BJP's first ever majority in the Lok Sabha accentuated his customary arrogance.

As a result, instead of preparing to rally those who may have been expected to stand by him, like the BJP's allies and those among the opposition parties which take a nuanced view of the economic scene like the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Modi appears to have decided to go ahead on his own.

The BJD would have been a helpful ally, for it has seen how Rahul Gandhi's promise to be a foot soldier in Delhi of the Niyamgiri tribals has condemned the innocent hill dwellers to be hunter-gatherers for the foreseeable future in the absence of industrial development.

Modi might have been able to win over the AIADMK as well because, first, it is generally pro-reforms and, secondly, with the DMK going along with the Congress, it has to be on the opposite side.

But more than winning friends and influencing people, what Modi failed to realize was that too enthusiastic a drive in favour of industries could confirm his reputation of being pro-business, which is not widely appreciated in India.

It is this chink in his armour which Rahul Gandhi has exploited by accusing the government of being 'suit-boot ki sarkar'.

It is not only that Modi was unable to convince allies like the Shiv Sena and the Akali Dal of the justifiability of his cause and how it will benefit the country, including the farmers, in the long run, he could not even win over status-quoist saffron outfits like the Swadeshi Jagaran Manch, the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh and the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh.

Lapses of this nature show how a chief minister who is used to having his own way in a state can be lost in the labyrinth of national politics where there are parties like the Congress which can trip up an opponent even if he is on to a good thing.

The only option for the central government is to let the states frame their own land acquisition laws although these cannot contravene restrictions like obtaining the consent of 70/80 percent of the landowners.

However, since most states have realized the value of private sector investment, including West Bengal whose Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee recently visited London in search of investors, it is possible they will find a way to circumvent the obstacles in order to attract industrialists.

If so, Modi can still have the last laugh. But for the present, he has suffered a major setback in his nascent career at the national level, the second one after the BJP's crushing defeat at the Aam Aadmi Party's hands in February.

Foreign lawyers to appear for India in Italian marines case

________ A to Z kerala .......... [kvk] [www.atozkerala.in , www.atozkerala.blogspot.com]

New Delhi : Two foreign lawyers, experts in international arbitration, will appear on behalf of India to challenge Italy's move to take the issue of two of its marines, accused of killing fishermen off Kerala coast, to an international tribunal in Hamburg tomorrow.

Alain Pellet and R Bundy were hired by India to represent its case before the International Tribunal on Law of the Sea
(ITLOS) in the German city that will hear the case for two days.

Pellet is a French expert in international law and former president of the UN International Law Commission while Bundy
has 30 years of experience as counsel and advocate in many public international law litigations.

An Indian team, comprising Additional Solicitor General P L Narasimha, officials from ministries of External Affairs
and Home, would also be in Germany to assist the two hired lawyers.

'India will challenge Italy's decision to take the matter to the international tribunal. The crime had taken place in
Indian waters so the international tribunal has nothing to do with it,' a Home Ministry official said.

ITLOS is an independent judicial body established by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea to adjudicate
disputes arising out of the interpretation and application of the Convention.

The tribunal comprises 21 independent members, elected from among persons enjoying the highest reputation for
fairness and integrity and of recognised competence in the field of the law of the sea.

Earlier, during hearing in the Supreme Court on July 13, Italy had made a plea saying it has invoked international
arbitration challenging India's jurisdiction to try two of its marines accused of killing two Indian fishermen off the coast
of Kerala three years ago.

Narasimha had told the apex court bench, headed by Justice A R Dave, that India, being a signatory to the
International Convention, would participate in these arbitration proceedings.

The ASG said that India had jurisdiction to try the marines Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone as the alleged offence had taken place in Indian waters.
The marines, who were on board ship 'Enrica Lexie', are
accused of killing the two Indian fishermen on February 15,

Jawahar Thayengeri lifts Nehru Trophy

________ A to Z kerala .......... [kvk] [www.atozkerala.in , www.atozkerala.blogspot.com]

Alappuzha : Close to 40,000 people - young and old, domestic and international tourists - on Saturday witnessed the 63rd edition of the Nehru Boat Race at the Vembanad lake here.

For the first time, this edition of the race, one of Kerala's most popular events, saw a change in its schedule as the heats of the various events was held in the forenoon session and the afternoon session began around 2.30 pm.

This season saw more than 60 boats of various shapes and sizes besides the 16 snake boats, which are probably the only one of its kind in the world, and hence their race is the most keenly-awaited.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari was the chief guest for the event while the special guest was Chinese Ambassador Le Yucheng.

'This is incredible and by far the best ever boat race that we have ever witnessed. We have travelled a bit across the world and this is our first visit to this event and it has floored us,' said a middle-aged German couple present at the event.

The snake boat race is the main tourist attraction with 120 oarsmen going flat out on the boats whose length stretches from 120 feet to 140 feet to win the coveted trophy.

The most keenly-awaited event were its finals, the last event of the evening. By then excitement had been steadily mounting and every inch of space on either side of the nearly one kilometre track race track on the banks of the river was overflowing.

The winner was Jawahar Thayengeri snake boat which finished the race in under five minutes and they lifted the Nehru trophy after a gap of five years.

The history of the event dates to 1952, when then prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru visited the state and a small flotilla of decorated boats accompanied him from Kottayam to Alappuzha on the famed backwaters.

An impromptu race was conducted in Nehru's honour and, thrilled by the performance of the oarsmen, Nehru jumped into a snake boat.

On returning to Delhi, he donated a silver trophy, a replica of a snake boat placed on a wooden abacus with an inscription and his signature. This trophy is awarded to the winner of the snake boat category.

Maggi samples fail test in Lucknow laboratory: Official

________ A to Z kerala .......... [kvk] [www.atozkerala.in , www.atozkerala.blogspot.com]
Lucknow: Five more samples of instant snack Maggi have failed tests at a laboratory here as they contained lead content beyond the permissible limit, an official said on Saturday.

The lead content in these samples, picked from neighbouring Barabanki, were found to be 2.7 parts per million more than the permissible limit at the Food Safety and Drug Administration laboratory, an official said.

Additional Commissioner (Food) R.S. Maurya said the test reports would now be sent to the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

After initial reports of much higher lead and monosodium glutamate (MSG) content in Maggi, over 500 samples were gathered from across the state. The five samples that have been found 'unfit' are from this collection.

A ban was imposed on Maggi in June, a move which was challenged by its makers Nestle.

Nestle had ordered a nationwide recall of the popular snack after food inspectors in Uttar Pradesh and later in some other states found that the MSG and lead content was very high.

Nestle has maintained that Maggi is safe for consumption and that it complies with the food standards in India. The matter is sub judice at the Bombay High Court.

The AAP MLA from Chandni Chowk received head injuries and was rushed to Aruna Asaf Ali Hospital, where she she was
