Pope Benedict's official ring cancelled

Vatican City: Pope Benedict XVI's gold papal ring, the symbol of his power used to officially seal documents and ensure their authenticity, has been cancelled, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said.

Known as the Fisherman's Ring, it was due to be destroyed with a special silver hammer after Benedict's resignation Feb 28, symbolising the end of his authority.

Earlier, Claudio Franchi, the goldsmith who crafted the ring said he hoped his work would not be destroyed once the pontiff stepped down.

'I hope the ring is preserved and exhibited. It is a jewel that has so much symbolic value,' Franchi said.

Benedict was the first pontiff since the 19th century to commission a Fisherman's Ring, which shows St. Peter fishing and bore the inscription 'Benedictus XVI', the pope's official title in Latin.

Bangalore girl has higher IQ than Albert Einstein

London: A 12-year-old Indian-origin girl in UK has stunned everyone after she scored an incredible 162 on her IQ test — even higher than Einstein and Stephen Hawking. Neha Ramu, daughter of an Indian doctor couple, achieved a score of 162 on a Mensa IQ test — the highest score possible for her age.
The score puts the teen in the top one per cent of brightest people in the UK and means she is more intelligent than physicist Hawking and scientist Albert Einstein, who are all thought to have an IQ of 160.
'Neha scored 162 on the Cattell IIIB test, putting her within the top one per cent of people in the country,' a spokesman for British Mensa said. Neha's parents lived in India before moving to Britain when their daughter was seven, 'The Telegraph' reported.
Neha had always performed well at school, but it was only when she took an entrance exam for her school, achieving a perfect score of 280/280, that they realised her potential. She took the test for Mensa, a society for people with high IQs, two years later, and achieved the maximum possible score for someone aged under 18.
'At first I did not really realise what she was capable of as she wasn't being stretched at school and when she joined primary school in the UK in year three we didn't really understand the system here,' her mother Jayashree said.
'I am so proud of her. Although she's being doing well at these kind of tests for sometime now this is just marvellous. I can't express the feeling,' she said. Neha plans to follow her parents' footsteps into a career in medicine. She has already set her sight on a place at Harvard after taking her SATs — the American equivalent of A-levels — and achieved a score of 740 out of 800 in a test designed for 18-year-olds.
A devoted Harry Potter fan and keen swimmer, Neha admitted to have found the Mensa test 'quite hard'. 'I'm really, really happy because I found the test quite hard and I wasn't really holding out much hope that I'd be a member of Mensa,' she said.
'We might have a little party or something sometime soon to celebrate. I haven't told my friends yet but I've told some of my family and they are all very happy for me,' said Neha. Einstein never took an IQ test as none of the modern intelligence tests existed when he was alive, but experts believe he had an IQ of around 160.

Prime Minister assures action on loan waiver irregularities

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday assured stringent action if any irregularities are found in the Rs.52,000 crore farm loan waiver scheme of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

'The reference is to the CAG report on loan waiver scheme. This is a matter which would interest the PAC (Public Accounts Committee),' Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said, when the issue was raised in the upper house.

'If there are any irregularities which are found, I assure the house we will take stringent action against the defaulters,' the prime minister told the Rajya Sabha.

He was responding after opposition Bharatiya Janata party raised the issue, calling it a 'scam'.

'There has been account tampering, 34 lakh farmers did not get the benefit. Farmers are committing suicide,' BJP leader Ravishankar Prasad said, raising the issue in zero hour.

'This is not just account fudging, this is a scam and it is very painful. Government should say why such irregularity was there,' he said.

Even as the prime minister assured action, BJP members kept agitating and trooped near the chairman's podium, shouting slogans and calling the government 'anti-farmer'.

Amidst the din, Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien adjourned the house for 10 minutes.

The Lok Sabha also saw an uproar on the issue, with question hour adjourned over the issue.

The Lok Sabha was adjourned till noon Wednesday after noisy protests by opposition parties over discrepancies in the Rs.52,000 crore farm loan waiver scheme of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

As soon as the house met, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Samajwadi Party demanded suspension of question hour to discuss the 'scam'.

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar's repeated requests to allow question hour to run smoothly proved futile, as members trooped to the speaker's podium, shouting slogans.

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), in its report tabled in parliament Tuesday on the 'Implementation of Agricultural Debt Waiver and Debt Relief Scheme, 2008' said there were irregularities in at least one in five cases.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government had announced a debt waiver for farmers across the country in 2008, a move analysts say helped the government win the 2009 general election.

Rs 252 crore excise duty evasion notice to Cadbury India

New Delhi: A show cause notice raising a demand of Rs 252 crore has been served on confectionery major Cadbury India Limited for alleged excise duty evasion. The notice, seeking recovery, was issued on Monday by Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence after its investigation found that the firm has wrongfully claimed 'area-based exemption' for its new unit at Baddi in Himachal Pradesh, official sources said.

A Cadbury India spokesperson said it will respond to the show cause notice in consultation with its legal advisers. 'We are in the process of reviewing the contents of the show-cause notice from the Excise Department and will respond to it in consultation with our legal advisers. A show cause is a matter of form in any such enquiry,' the spokesperson said in an email response to PTI query.

'A compliant and ethical corporate culture, which includes adhering to laws and regulations in the countries in which we operate, is integral to our success. To that end, we have been fully cooperating with the authorities on this enquiry. Since the process is currently under way, it will be inappropriate on our part to discuss the details at this time,' he added.

As per central government norms, the area-based exemption for new industrial units of firms in Himachal Pradesh provide full exemption from excise duties for specified goods for a period of 10 years. However, for availing this the unit should have been established before March 2010 to claim such benefit.

During its investigation, the officials found that the company claimed excise duty exemption for its new unit in Sandoli village in Baddi, relating to a period even before it came into existence, the sources said.

Ronaldo knocks out Manchester United to enter QF

Manchester: Former Manchester United hero Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winner against his old club to give Real Madrid a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford and a place in the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday.

United, 1-0 up in the game after Real defender Sergio Ramos put through his own goal in the 48th minute and 2-1 ahead on aggregate, were sent reeling in a 10-minute spell midway through the second half as Real secured a 3-2 aggregate success. The match changed when United winger Nani was harshly shown a red card in the 56th minute by Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir for a clumsy but not dangerous high challenge on Real defender Alvaro Arbeloa.

Ten minutes later substitute Luka Modric, who had only been on the field for seven minutes, lashed in Real's equaliser from 20 metres and Ronaldo slid in at the far post to turn in a cross from Gonzalo Higuain to seal Real's place in the last eight. It was a special night at Old Trafford as 39-year-old Welsh winger Ryan Giggs made his 1,000th competitive appearance and Ronaldo was warmly greeted on his first return to the ground since he left for Real in 2009.

United went close to opening the scoring after 21 minutes when Nemanja Vidic thundered a powerful downward header against Diego Lopez's left-hand post, only to see the ball rebound to Danny Welbeck. The England forward had little time to react but shot first time straight at the keeper sitting on the line, who smothered it between his legs. TV replays, however, showed Welbeck was in an offside position and the goal would not have counted.

Both teams made chances as play flowed from one end of the pitch to the other, but United appeared to be the more settled side and went into a deserved lead, even though they were fortunate that Ramos turned Nani's cross into his own net. Real, though, laid siege to United's goal after the hosts were reduced to 10-men and they scored twice in the last 21 minutes as Modric and Ronaldo found the net.

Although Robin Van Persie and late substitute Wayne Rooney went close, Real held out for the win to stay on course for a record-extending 10th European Cup success.Reuters

US HIV baby 'cured' by early drug treatment

A baby girl in the US born with HIV appears to have been cured after very early treatment with standard drug therapy, researchers say.

The Mississippi child is now two-and-a-half years old and has been off medication for about a year with no signs of infection.

More testing needs to be done to see if the treatment would have the same effect on other children.

But the results could possibly lead to a cure for children with HIV.

If the girl stays healthy it would be only the world's second reported cure.

Dr Deborah Persaud, a virologist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, presented the findings at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Atlanta.

'This is a proof of concept that HIV can be potentially curable in infants,' she said.

In 2007, Timothy Ray Brown became the first person in the world believed to have recovered from HIV.

His infection was eradicated through an elaborate treatment for leukaemia that involved the destruction of his immune system and a stem cell transplant from a donor with a rare genetic mutation that resists HIV infection.

In contrast, the case of the Mississippi baby involved a cocktail of widely available drugs already used to treat HIV infection in infants.

It suggests the treatment wiped out HIV before it could form hideouts in the body.

These so-called reservoirs of dormant cells usually rapidly re-infect anyone who stops medication, said Dr Persaud.

The baby was born in a rural hospital where the mother had only just tested positive for HIV infection.

Because the mother had not been given any prenatal HIV treatment, doctors knew the baby was at high risk of being infected.

Researchers said the baby was then transferred to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

Once there, paediatric HIV specialist Dr Hannah Gay put the infant on a cocktail of three standard HIV-fighting drugs at just 30 hours old, even before laboratory tests came back confirming the infection.

'I just felt like this baby was at higher-than-normal risk and deserved our best shot,' Dr Gay said.

Bias against girls spreading in Kerala too?

Thiruvananthapuram: Child sex ratio trends in Kerala may be following the trends in the country's northern states, warn academics who have undertaken a detailed study analysing disaggregated data from the state over four decades.

The trend, which shows declining numbers of girl children for every 1,000 boy children, is widespread in the region and reported also in South Asia and China. Kerala, however, was long perceived to be uninfluenced by the trend, with its traditionally matriarchal Nair community and wide participation of women in the workforce.

Academics M. Kabir and K. Pushpangadan, as part of a project sponsored by the state's social welfare department, analysed data from different districts of the state over four decades to show that the child sex-ratio in Kerala declined from 976 to 958 in the course of the two decades between 1971 and 1991. It registered a marginal increase by two points in 2001, but a decline by one point - from 960 to 959 - in 2011.

On the sidelines of a seminar Friday at the Centre for Development Studies where these findings were presented, Kabir told IANS that disaggregation of the data to the taluk level throws up disturbing facts -- 26 of the state's 63 taluks had lower FMRs (female- male ratio) in 2001 than in 1991; 39 had lower FMRs in 2011 than in 2001.

He said that the taluks that registered the decline fall into clusters, and are contiguous, cutting across district boundaries.

'In 2011, the decline spread to more areas, adjoining those which reported decline in the preceding decade, while a few that had reported decline in 1991-2001 escaped decline in the next decade. Studies on India and China have already noted the diffusion of decline in the child sex ratios, which they have called the 'contagion effect'. Scholars have noted 'this geographical clustering as a typical feature of sex ratio degradation in Asia and directly refers to the diffusion process of discriminatory behaviour,' Kabir said.

The study points out that considering the censuses of 1991 and 2011, when district boundaries remained unchanged, the female deficit increased in six districts - Kasaragod, Kannur, Waynad, Palakkad, Thrissur and Idukki - out of the fourteen in the state; Palakkad showed steady decline in all censuses from 1991.

Considering the censuses of 2001 and 2011, decline was recorded by Palakkad (by one point, from 963 to 962), Thrissur (10 points, from 958 to 948), Idukki (11 points, from 969 to 958), Kottayam (five points, from 962 to 957), Alapuzha (nine points, from 956 to 947) and Pathanamthitta (three points, from 967 to 964).

Kabir also pointed out that the calculations based on the 1991 and 2001 census clearly indicates that in the below age five category, there is an excess of female infant mortality over male infant mortality; the latest Sample Registration System data indicates excess of female infant mortality over male infant mortality - this is a disturbing finding, one that points to possible discrimination against the female child in Kerala.

'In the 1981 census in the below age five category 85 male children died, while there were 76 female infants deaths; in the 1991 census it was 60 males and 61 females; in 2001, it was 40 males and 54 females; and figures for 2011 are yet to come out, it should be no different,' Kabir said.

Incidentally, this detailed analysis comes at a time when, according to the 2011 census, Kerala had 1,084 females for every 1,000 males.

This is not only the highest in India, but is also comparable to those in large parts of the developed world.

Pushpangadan, as part of a project sponsored by the state's social welfare department, analysed data from different districts of the state over four decades to show that the child sex-ratio in Kerala declined from 976 to 958 in the course of the two decades between 1971 and 1991. ndian-origin science writer wins British Physics journalism prize

IWASHINGTON: Anil Ananthaswamy, a London based Indian origin writer, has won the inaugural Physics Journalism Prize sponsored by the Institute of Physics (IOP) and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC).

The prize is designed to inspire the next generation of physicists by encouraging journalists to grapple with often complex topics and help spread excitement about the subject, according to an IOP release forwarded by the American Astronomical Society.

Ananthaswamy, a consultant at New Scientist Magazine and author of "The Edge of Physics," has won the prize for his article "Hip Hip Array," which focuses on the Square Kilometre Array, an international project to design and build the largest radio telescope ever conceived.

"Anil Ananthaswamy is being awarded the prize for writing a feature which brings one of the world's most exciting astronomical endeavors to life -- the Square Kilometre Array," said IOP President Sir Peter Knight.

The Physics Journalism Award offers the prize of an expenses paid trip to Japan, to visit world-leading facilities carrying out research at the frontiers of physics.

On winning, Ananthaswamy commented, "Writing about physics, especially about the work being done in remote, difficult and sometimes hostile environments, is a special pleasure. Winning an award for doing what I love to do is just icing on the cake. I truly appreciate the recognition."
