PM to visit riot-hit Assam, take stock of the situation

Minister Manmohan Singh will visit the riot-hit areas in Assam on Saturday to
take stock of the situation and review the steps taken for relief and rehabilitation
of the affected people. Manmohan Singh who is also a Rajya Sabha MP from Assam
is expected to visit two relief camps in
Kokrajhar district. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi, who visited Kokrajhar on Thursday, said: 'The government was not ready for a situation like this. Now we have adequate security forces. The situation (is) normalising.'
Gogoi said Rs. 6 lakh would be given to the family of each of those who died during the riots.
The state government would also provide financial support to rebuild the houses destroyed, he added.
Clashes have been witnessed between Bodos and minority immigrants in four Assam districts for the last eight days leaving 44 people dead.
Indefinite curfew and shoot-at-sight orders were in force in worst-affected Kokrajhar district, while night curfew are on in Chirang and Dhubri districts.
