54 lakh more to get rice at Re 1 per kg

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Cabinet has decided to include additional 54 lakh people in the food scheme in which rice is given at Re 1 per kg and wheat at Rs 2 per kg.

At present, this benefit is available only for BPL category and 54 lakh more people were added in the newly prepared list of beneficiaries.
 
The new decision is part of the implementation of Food Security act, 2013. The term for the implementation of the act will expire on October 10.

The new list was prepared by including existing Antyodaya Anna Yojan (AAY) and Below Poverty Line (BPL) group without BPL cards in it. All of them will get new temporary ration cards. At present, there are 27.57 lakh AAY families and 73.08 lakh BPL families. When the list will be expanded, there will be 154.8 lakh families in it.

The food subsidy given to Above Poverty Line (APL) families currently will continue. There are 42 lakh APL cards now and they get rice and wheat for Rs 2 per kg. .

Land for AAI

Thirty nine cents of land owned by Kerala Agricultural Department at Muttathara where coconut nursery is functioning will be handed over to Airport Authority of India to develop Runway end safety area. The decision was taken by the cabinet to lease out the land at five percent of the market price annually for a period of 30 years. 

The cabinet also decided to grant Rs 50 crore to National Games Secretariat to develop the infrastructure for national games like the expansion of roads leading to national games venue.
