KSRTC cess bill passed

Thiruvananthapuram : The Kerala Assembly on Thursday passed the KSRTC Cess (Passenger group personal accident insurance, Improved passenger amenities, Employees' social security and Cess on Passenger ticket) Bill 2014.

The bill provides personal accident insurance and ensures social security of employees, including pension benefits. The cess charge on tickets ranges from Re 1 to Rs 10. There will be no cess for tickets costing upto Rs 14. 'The cess charge will be implemented after a final decision by the KSRTC director board,' said minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan. 

Tickets from Rs 15 to Rs 24 will attract a cess of Re 1; Rs 25 to Rs 49 will have a cess of Rs 2; Rs 50 to Rs 74 will attract a cess of Rs 3; Rs 75 to Rs 99 will have a cess of Rs 4 and tickets worth Rs 100 and above will have a cess of Rs 10. Witrh the implementation of cess, KSRTC pension fund could generate an additional Rs.164 crore. 

Allegations levelled against the implementation of cess will be considered by the Ramachandran Nair commission. The minsiter said that a decision regarding pension would be taken after having a discussion with the chief minister at the meeting to be held on December 22. Kerala becomes the first state in India to introduce insurance benefit for passengers, the Minister added.
