Odisha girl held hostage for 3 days, raped by 6 men

Even as the four accused in the savage December 16 Delhi gang-rape case have been convicted and a court is hearing arguments to decide the quantum of sentence, horrific news of gang-rape came from Odisha and Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday.

A 17-year-old girl was abducted on September 6 from her home at Bindhanima village, 100 km from state capital Bhubaneswar. The men kept her in an abandoned hut, where four others joined them and all six of them raped her for three days. The police arrested two accused in the case after the victim escaped with the help of some villagers and lodged a complaint on Tuesday.  'We have arrested two of the attackers. Efforts are on to nab the four others,' a police official said.
Meanwhile in Uttar Pradesh's Deoria, 336 km from state capital Lucknow, a woman was allegedly gangraped by three persons in Rampur Karkhana area.
The woman is an employee of the health department. The police have lodged a case. Outraged by the diabolical gang-rape of a physiotherapy student on a moving bus in Delhi late last year, people have come out on streets to demand security for women.

Jaya against proposed military hardware supply to Lanka

Chennai, Sep 11 (PTI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today expressed shock over New Delhi's proposal to supply two naval warships to Sri Lanka, saying any move to supply military hardware would be the 'most telling statement on the insensitivity of the Government of India to the strong sentiments in Tamil Nadu' on the Lankan Tamils issue.

Given the strength of the public sentiment in the state, she was 'quite sure' that the UPA Government would not supply any military hardware to Sri Lanka, particularly naval warships which she said could be potentially deployed against
Indian fishermen in the Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar. 'However, I was shocked to see media reports today in which the Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office (V Narayanasamy) confirms that the Government of India
is in the process of supplying two naval warships to Sri Lanka,' she said in a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

She said while Narayanasamy appears to have indicated that he would  communicate to Singh the emotions and feelings amongst people and political parties in the state against any such move, 'what amazes me is that the Government of India could even contemplate such a move.' Even if there was a commitment under an old agreement for such supply of naval warships, in the present circumstances, the Centre ought to have cancelled such an agreement, she said.

'Any move to supply military hardware to Sri Lanka would be the most telling statement on the insensitivity of Government of India to the strong sentiment in Tamil Nadu,' she said. Far from holding the Sri Lankan regime accountable for its
'acts of genocide and war crimes against the Tamil speaking minority', the Centre's action would be seen as actively working with Colombo and providing them with 'necessary wherewithal to act even more strongly against minority Tamils
in Lanka and also against poor Indian fishermen.'

'I shudder to even countenance such an insult to the people of Tamil Nadu. In the circumstances, I strongly urge you to clarify this aspect without any delay and even if there is an existing agreement for supply of naval warships, I request you to move immediately to cancel the agreement and ensure that no support of any kind is provided to the Sri Lankan military forces,' she said.

India is planning to supply two naval warships to Sri Lanka to strengthen its capabilities to guard its maritime boundaries. Two Offshore Patrol Vessels to be built by the Goa-based defence PSU Goa Shipyard Limited are expected to be delivered to the Island nation by 2017-18. PTI

Dec 16 gangrape: Police want death, convicts beg for mercy

New Delhi: Arguing that the December 16 gangrape and murder was "the rarest of rare" case, police Wednesday demanded death for the four convicts on the ground that there is no chance of their reformation as their behaviour was barbaric.  But lawyers for the convicts Mukesh (26), Vinay Sharma (20), Pawan Gupta (19) and Akshay Thakur (28) pleaded before the fast track court which held them guilty yesterday for leniency citing Mahatma Gandhi's famous quote that "Only God can give life and only He has the right to take it away"

At the conclusion of the three-hour long arguments, Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna reserved for Friday afternoon its order on sentence against the convicts who were held guilty yesterday of gangrape, murder, unnatural sex and robbery and other offences which can fetch them death.  "The crime is not only grotesque and diabolic in nature but the barbaric behaviour of the convicts was of the highest kind.  "Reformation of people like these..I do not think there is any chance," Special Public Prosecutor Dayan Krishnan said while arguing on the quantum of sentence.

Advancing his arguments, Krishnan said death sentence should be awarded to the four convicts as the case falls in the category of "rarest of rare" cases. Pointing out the nature of crime as 'rarest of rare', he said the convicts had raped and killed a young helpless girl, even as she pleaded for her life and "none among the six were moved by the girl's incessant cries for mercy."
