At least 36 dead in Mexico bus crash: official

XALAPA: A bus slammed into the back of a badly parked trailer-truck and burst into flames in Mexico Sunday, killing at least 36 people and injuring four others, authorities said.

Most of the roof and tires of the bus were reduced to ashes by the highway accident in the southeastern state of Veracruz, according to television images.

"The trailer-truck was on the shoulder of the highway at kilometer 135 (mile 84) ... when the bus hit the back of the trailer, which caused this regrettable accident," Governor Javier Duarte said.

"In addition to crashing, the bus caught fire, which makes the investigative work to identify bodies more difficult," he told Milenio television.

Federal police concluded that the truck was badly parked, the state government said. A state prosecutor was sent to investigate the crash.

At least 36 people were confirmed dead, said government spokesman Alberto Silva Ramos.

Snoring as a risk factor for type II diabetes mellitus: Study

NEW YORK: To examine the association between snoring and risk of developing type II diabetes mellitus, the authors analyzed data from the Nurses' Health Study cohort.

This analysis included 69,852 US female nurses aged 40–65 years without diagnosed diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or cancer at baseline in 1986. Snoring patterns were ascertained by questionnaire.

During 10 years of follow-up, 1,957 women were diagnosed with type II diabetes. In analyses adjusted for age and body mass index, snoring was associated with risk of diabetes (for occasional snoring vs. nonsnoring, relative risk (RR) = 1.48 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.29, 1.70); for regular snoring vs. nonsnoring, RR = 2.25 (95% CI: 1.91, 2.66); p for trend < 0.0001).

Further adjustment for other diabetes risk factors and sleeping-related covariates only slightly attenuated the risk (for occasional snoring, RR = 1.41 (95% CI: 1.22, 1.63); for regular snoring, RR = 2.03 (95% CI: 1.71, 2.40); p for trend < 0.0001). Analyses stratified by body mass index, smoking history, or parental history of diabetes showed a consistent association between snoring and diabetes within the categories of these variables.

These results suggest that snoring is independently associated with elevated risk of type II diabetes.

Blast in Nigerian capital kills 71

ABUJA: Police say an explosion that ripped through a busy bus station in Nigeria’s capital has killed at least 71 people and wounded 124.

Police spokesman Frank Mba says Monday’s blast destroyed 16 luxury coaches and 24 minibuses.

There was only believed to be one blast with secondary explosions as vehicle fuel tanks ignited and burned.

Reporters saw rescue workers and police gathering body parts as ambulances rushed the wounded to the hospitals.

There was no immediate claim for the rush-hour blast, though the Boko Haram terrorist network has been threatening to attack the capital.

The extremists, based in northeast Nigeria, carried out a 2011 suicide car bombing at the United Nations office building in Abuja that killed at least 21 people and wounded 60.
