Baby's genome decoded from mom's blood, pop's saliva
Washington: Using a non-invasive technique, scientists for the first time have successfully sequenced the genome of a foetus without tapping its protective fluid sac.
Maternal blood sampled at about 18 weeks into the pregnancy and a paternal saliva specimen had enough information for the scientists to map the foetus' DNA.
This method was later repeated for another expectant couple closer to the start of pregnancy. The researchers checked the accuracy of their genetic predictions using umbilical cord blood collected at birth, the journal Science Translational Medicine reports.
Jacob Kitzman and Matthew Snyder, working in the lab of Jay Shendure, associate professor of genome sciences at the University of Washington, US, led the study.
Scientists have long known that a pregnant woman's blood plasma contains cell-free DNA from her developing foetus, according to a Washington statement.
Foetal DNA appears in the mother's plasma a few weeks after conception. It rises during gestation and normally vanishes after the baby arrives. While the concentration varies among individuals, about 10 percent of the cell-free DNA in a pregnant woman's blood plasma comes from her foetus.
Based on this phenomenon, other research labs are designing maternal blood tests for major aberrations in the foetus' genetic makeup. The tests are considered a safer substitute for the more invasive sampling of fluid from the uterus, a common procedure in obstetrical practice.
These new tests search for just a few genetic disorders or specific birth abnormalities. For example, a test targeted for Down Syndrome would look for evidence of three copies of chromosome 21.
Kitzman explained what distinguishes his team's latest methods is the ability to assess many and more subtle variations in the foetus' genome, down to a minute, one-letter change in the DNA code.
'The improved resolution is like going from being able to see that two books are stuck together to being able to notice one word misspelled on a page,' said Kitzman.

Virtual classroom solution, location-based mobile service get Microsoft awards

Bangalore:A virtual classroom solution for cloud computing that enables the conduct of live, HD quality, two-way audio/video interactive classes at as low as 200 Kbps speeds and a location-based mobile service that cuts out clutter and spam have been named the top winners of the Microsoft BizSpark India Startup Challenge.

Their developers will get $30,000 each to enable them take the projects forward.

Explained Piyush Aggarwal of Aurus Network which developed the virtual classroom: 'Many educational and training institutes today are looking to getting into the distance/online education space and offer their classes live to remotely located students and centres.'

'Current solutions like VSAT-based or conventional hardware based video conferencing suffer from problems like high cost of ownership, lack of scalability to large numbers of concurrent locations and teaching sessions, dependence on infrastructure (internet leased lines) which does not exist widely in emerging countries. Our solution overcomes all this.

NowFloats, the location-based mobile service, enables consumer-to-business, business-to-consumer and consumer-to-consumer communication within a location in real time.

'Consumers today are cluttered and spammed with information and have a challenge in obtaining contextual information in the location there are. Businesses (certainly the brick & mortar ones), on the other hand, have a challenge in reaching out to consumers within their vicinity, in real-time and economically. NowFloats provides a platform where this problem has an exciting, unique solution,' its developer, NowFloats Technologies, said.

The second prize winners in the two categories - cloud and mobile - received $15,000 while four runners-up in the cloud and three runners up in the mobile categories received $1,000 each.

'The Microsoft BizSpark India Startup Challenge 2012 is the largest entrepreneurial competition in India that recognizes inspiring ideas in the field of technology,' the company said in a statement.

'The Challenge offered an opportunity for start-ups to win huge grants to realize their business plan. Sixteen finalists were shortlisted on the basis of ingenuity, creativity and innovation of the submitted plans.

'But most importantly, the challenge presents an opportunity... to build and deepen connections, share ideas, network partners and celebrate the individual successes of member start-ups,' the statement said.

BJP Gen Secy Sanjay Joshi resigns from party
New Delhi:After forcing Sanjay Joshi out of the BJP national executive, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today ensured that his bete noire is also out of the party. BJP, whose president Nitin Gadkari and Modi joined hands at the party conclave at Mumbai a fortnight ago to force Joshi to resign from the executive, today announced that Joshi has resigned from the party also. Joshi, who is a former RSS pracharak and was a general secretary of BJP, has requested Gadkari that he be 'relieved from the party'. This was accepted by the BJP president. This new development comes as a shot in the arm forModi as he did not want Joshi to have any role in the party. Both the BJP and RSS have been divided on the manner inwhich Joshi had to resign from the National Executive as Modi put this as a condition for him to attend the Mumbai conclave.

Since then, the BJP and RSS mouthpieces have written for or against the two leaders. While BJP mouthpiece Kamal Sandesh and RSS mouthpiece Panchajanya hit out at Modi, another RSS mouthpiece Organiser spoke in Modi's favour.
The matter did not end there as posters appeared in Ahmedabad and at the BJP headquarters here batting for Joshi and attacking Modi. Some posters were put up today also in Ahmedabad in support of Joshi. Joshi is now likely to work as an RSS worker and give up the responsibilities entrusted to him by the BJP, sources said. Joshi was handling the BJP's election programme for the forthcoming local bodies polls in Uttar Pradesh. PTI
