After year-long research and experiments, Maryam Al Hashmi, an 18-year-old Emirati student, has invented an affordable method to produce solar energy.
Her invention titled 'Epilogue of Plasticus' could eventually replace silicone filaments in solar cells with plastic photocells.
When Khaleej Times asked how she did it, a reserved Hashmi said: "I can't reveal that secret, I experimented with several chemicals to make this invention. but one plastic photocell on a solar panel can conduct 202 to 349 milliwats of energy. Eventually, all silicone-based solar panels can be replaced with these plastic photocells."
Her invention can make solar energy cheaper and easily accessible.
The young Emirati contested her invention at the 6th Intel Science Competition Arab World and has won the first place under the 'Environmental Engineering' category.
Hashmi, student of Al Ittihad Private School, Jumeirah, was also awarded second place for the category Grand Awards from the Intel Foundation. Thirteen Emirati boys and girls participated for the competition, which took place recently in Alexandria, Egypt.
The competition celebrates young scientists and played host to over 110 students from across 11 Arab countries who presented 77 projects and competed for $20,000 worth prize money.
The finalists were selected from 77 projects spanning from biochemistry to electrical and mechanical engineering to energy and transport.
Their projects were evaluated on the site by over 40 judges representing 10 Arab countries, all of which are university professors from the region.
The projects were selected based on creativity and originality of the idea, scientific thought of the project, achieving engineering goals, thoroughness of detail, skills of performance, clarity of ideas and team collaboration.
Speaking about how her idea for the project was developed, Hashmi said: "I got the idea from the YouTube viral video about solar electricity bottles being used in Philippines. If it is being used there, I was sure it could be used for this project as well."
Hashmi spent an entire year working on the project.
"I've always loved science as a subject. I attended my first science competition when I was in 10th grade, I've been hooked since then."
Crucial for women
Noora Hamad Al Marri, 18-year-old student of Dubai National School in Al Twar whose invention 'Thermoelectric Smart Buildings' got the second place under the 'Physical Energy' category said that it is crucial for women to enter the field of sciences.
Her project converts the air temperature surrounding buildings to power electrical appliances inside the building.
The project will work in both hot and cold temperatures. Al Marri invented the project along with her teammate Marwa Rashed Saif Ali Khatem. "We're still using fossil fuels as a major source of electricity. I thought to myself, there must be some other way to generate power," said Al Marri.
"My interest in science began since I was in Grade 2. Unlike other schools that say science is not for girls, my school really motivated me to take up more interest in science," said Al Marri.
"The Intel Science Competition is a crucial event for the future of young scientists in the Arab world. These finalists represent the best and the brightest innovators and leaders from our region," said Taha Khalifa, Regional General Manager for Intel, Middle East and North Africa.
"Judging by the caliber of the projects presented this week, I am confident that these young innovators will make our world a better place."

Palakkad: Congress leader V.T Balram, MLA, Monday, in a Facebook post, reiterated his earlier remark that the relation between the Hindu religion and the Hindutva was akin to the one between the Islam and the Islamic State.
“I reiterate my earlier remark in ‘hundred times’ that the nexus between Hindu and Hindutva is akin to the one between Islam and Islamic State, the terrorist outfit,” Balram said in his FB post.
Balram began the post asking, “controversy? what controversy?” and went on saying that the Hindutva ideology had no links with the beliefs and cultural traditions of common people of Hindu faith.
"Hindutva is the nomenclature given to the ideology of a truly fascist organisation that Sangh Parivar is,” he said.

The 39-year-old woman and her African accomplice were arrested red-handed by the Dubai Police.

A Pakistani woman was so desperate to live and work in Dubai that she agreed to smuggle heroin to the UAE after a drug trafficker promised her a good job here. The 39-year-old woman and her African accomplice were arrested red-handed by the Dubai Police recently.
The duo used a unique method to traffic heroin and other drugs: They hid it in women's accessories made of beads, the police have said.
The anti-narcotics department of the Dubai Police received information that a Nigerian, A.H., possessed a large quantity of drugs and was planning to sell it in the emirate. The police learnt that the 33-year-old suspect would be in Al Nakheel area near a hotel.
A police team placed him under surveillance and learnt that the female suspect would hand over drugs to him on November 2. The police set a trap near a park and spotted A.H. talking on the phone. He went and sat inside a bus stop. Soon after, the Pakistani woman was spotted with a "large bag". The two suspects went behind some trees, where the woman handed over the bag to the man.
When he opened the bag, the police swooped in. The suspects tried to flee, but the police arrested them, Colonel Eid bin Thani Hareb, acting Director of the General Department of Anti- Narcotics, said. Initially, the woman denied any involvement in the smuggling bid, claiming she had come to the country in search of a job.
On opening the bag, the police found smaller plastic bags that contained accessories stuffed with heroin. Each bag contained around 7kg of bangles, rings and other accessories. During the public prosecution interrogation, the woman reportedly confessed that she had smuggled drugs to the country on different occasions in the past. She told investigators that a drug trafficker in her home country gave her the drugs and also paid for her air ticket and accommodation.
"I agreed to transport drugs because he promised to get me a job in Dubai. I was very keen to come and work here," an investigator quoted the suspect as saying.
The police raided the Nigerian suspect's flat and discovered that he arrived in the country on a visit visa. He was staying on even though the visa had expired.
Major-General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police for Criminal Investigation, hailed the efforts of the team in arresting the suspects.
The police have recorded 104 heroin smuggling cases since the beginning of the year till November 30. Over 99kg heroin was seized.

SC hikes environment charge on commercial vehicles in Delhi

________ A to Z kerala .......... [kvk] [www.atozkerala.in , www.atozkerala.blogspot.com]
Commercial vehicles, which are not Delhi bound, will not be allowed to enter national capital through entry points NH-8 and NH-1.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday increased by 100 percent the environment compensation charge (ECC) for the commercial vehicles entering Delhi. It also imposed a blanket ban on the registration of diesel vehicles of engine capacity of 2,000 cc and above in the entire National Capital Region till March next year.
Commercial vehicles, which are not Delhi bound, will not be allowed to enter national capital through entry points NH-8 and NH-1.

The apex court bench headed by Chief Justice T.S. Thakur said that no commercial vehicle registered prior to 2005 will enter Delhi and all the taxis will have to switch over to CNG by March 31, 2016.

A 100 hundred increase in ECC would now mean that light commercial vehicles with two axles will have to pay Rs.1,400 for entering Delhi and commercial vehicles with three and four axles will have to pay Rs.2,600 for each trip for entering Delhi.

Girls more sensitive to childhood family breakups

Girls more sensitive to childhood family breakups
Washington D.C: A new study has revealed that childhood family breakups are harder on girls' health.
Recent University of Illinois research looks at overall health, depression, and smoking as a health-related behavior and finds that, for girls, all three are worse.
Girls' health is more sensitive to family structure, says researcher Andrea Beller, adding that they found that, "if you grow up in a non-traditional family structure, single parent or step-parent or a cohabiting relationship, girls are more likely than boys to be depressed and report worse overall health."
"We find that if the biological father was never present, smoking, physical, and mental health are all worse," Beller adds. "And if they leave when girls are in very early childhood (0 to 5 years old), we find a significant association with worse physical health, regardless of the presence of other males."
Because of this finding, the researchers suggest that perhaps public health policy should incorporate family background as a risk factor for lifelong as well as adolescent smoking, recognizing that smoking cessation may be particularly challenging for individuals who experienced family breakups in childhood.
The team also found that if men and women who smoke and lived without their father during childhood may need more help to quit smoking.

Oommen Chandy sends letter of protest to Modi

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a mark of protest against the PMO's intervention in excluding him from R Sankar's statue unveiling ceremony.

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a mark of protest against the PMO's intervention in excluding him from R Sankar's statue unveiling ceremony. The letter says that Central minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy hoodwinked the parliament into thinking that Chief Mininster had sent a letter saying that he will not participate in the function.
In the letter, the Chief Minister also asks the Prime Minister what would be his reaction if such an incident happened during his tenure as the Chief Minister of Gujarat.
The PMO's office asked several times whether the Chief Minister will participate in the function. Minister KC Joseph confirmed that the CM had sent a letter to Prime Minister.
"The organizers should reveal the reason for excluding the Chief Minister. Vellapally should explain the situation in which the invitation was withdrawn. The PMO's office did not intervene to prevent the controversy. Vellapally called K Babu on the night of December 11 and told him that there was intelligence report that untoward incidents will happen. However, there is no such intelligence report.  Vellapally himself called the CM on December and told him not to attend the function. The Chief Minister did not attend the function as the organizers asked him several times not to attend. The Prime Minister was not ready to speak to the Chief Minister eventhough he met him at Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram," KC Joseph said.
Has conveyed my feelings: Chandy
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that he has conveyed his feelings on the incident of excluding him from R Sankar's statue unveiling ceremony. " I thought of avoiding a controversy during the PM's visit to Kerala. It is not congress tradition to react when the Prime Minister visits the state. Though difference of opinion exists, the Prime Minister should be given the respect he deserves. That is why I did not react till the PM returned to Delhi," Chandy said while replying to the  fund utilisation discussion.

Kochi: Justice Sivarajan Commission inquiring into the solar scam on Wednesday said it cannot stop from asking relevant questions regarding the scam.
The commission was referring to the question he asked accused Saritha S Nair the other day about the father of her second child.
On Tuesday, Saritha reportedly broke down on hearing the question. After she getting nosebleed, the session was ended.
On Wednesday, her lawyer cited that she is unwell to attend the session. Expressing suspicion over her stance, the commission said Saritha, who claims to be unwell, displays a totally different character outside. He added that her remarks would be monitored.
The next hearing to collect evidence was scheduled for December 21 after her lawyer conveyed Saritha’s inability to present herself before the commission on 18.
“The process cannot be delayed extensively and the report has to be submitted at the earliest,” he said.

Govt hikes excise duty on petrol, diesel

________ A to Z kerala .......... [kvk] [www.atozkerala.in , www.atozkerala.blogspot.com]

New Delhi: The government on Wednesday increased excise duty on petrol by Rs 0.30 per litre and by Rs 1.17 a litre on diesel to make use of slump in oil prices to garner an additional Rs 2,500 crore.
Basic excise duty on unbranded petrol has been increased from Rs 7.06 per litre to Rs 7.36 and the same on unbranded diesel from Rs 4.66 to Rs 5.83 per litre.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said the increase in duty will yield an additional Rs 2,500 crore in revenue during the remainder of the 2015-16 fiscal which ends on March 31, 2016.
After including additional and special excise duty, the total levy on unbranded petrol will be Rs 19.36 per litre as against Rs 19.06 currently. Similarly, on unbranded or normal diesel, total excise duty after including special excise duty will be Rs 11.83 per
litre as compared to Rs 10.66 now.
Basic excise duty on branded petrol has been raised from Rs 8.24 per litre to Rs 8.54 a litre and the same on branded diesel from Rs 7.02 to Rs 8.19 per litre.
This is the second increase in excise duty in less than six weeks. The government had on November 7 raised excise duty on petrol by Rs 1.60 per litre and on diesel by 30 paise a litre.
In anticipation of the hike, oil companies had on Tuesday announced decrease in petrol price by just 50 paise a litre and by 46 paise on diesel even though oil rates slumping to multi-year low warranted a bigger cut.
Through the previous excise duty hike, the government had mopped up Rs 3,200 crore.
For a government which is facing a likely shortfall in direct tax mobilisation, the two excise duty hikes have yielded Rs 5,700 crore.
Prior to the two hikes since November, the government had previously in four installments raised excise duty on petrol and diesel between November 2014 and January 2015 to take away the reduction in retail rates that was warranted from falling
international oil rates.
The four excise duty hikes during this period totalled Rs 7.75 per litre on petrol and Rs 6.50 a litre on diesel. It led to about Rs 20,000 crore in additional revenue to the government, helping it meet its fiscal deficit target.
The government had collected Rs 99,184 crore in excise collections from the petroleum sector in 2014-15. This was Rs 33,042 crore in the first quarter of current fiscal.

Gang rape
Adoor: Two schoolgirls were brutally gang-raped with their hands and legs tied. Adoor police have taken into custody nine persons in connection with the incident and a search is on for two others. The accused are natives of Karunagappally, Cheriyazheekkal, and Clappana. They are said to be members of a sex racket.
The girls, students of ninth and tenth standards, were raped at a house near Cheriyazheekkal at Vallikkavu in Karunagappally on December 4 and 5, the police said.
On December 4, one of the accused, who was an acquaintance of the family of one girl, contacted them over phone. Then they were brought to Cheriyazheekkal beach in an autorickshaw. From there, they were taken to the house of a 'friend'. At the house, four persons raped one of the girls after tying her hands and legs with a shawl.
They also tried to take the other girl to a lodge, but she protested. So they locked her in  a room.
The accused later took the girls back to Kadambanad in a car. They asked the girls not to reveal the matter to anyone and to bring their friends next time.
On December 5, one of the accused went to the house of the girl who had refused to go to lodge the previous day. He knew the girl's mother, and told her that he was taking the girl for counselling. He then took the girl to the house at Cheriyazheekkal, called his friends, and raped her too.
At school, one of their friends came to know of the matter and informed a teacher. The school authorities contacted the Child Welfare Committee, Pathanamthitta, and the committee lodged a complaint with the Enath police.
A police team led by Adoor CI M G Babu took the accused into custody on Thursday night and collected evidence. After medical examination, the girls were produced before the Magistrate Court, Tiruvalla, and their statements recorded.
As per the directions of the court, the victims were lodged in a shelter home. After receiving hints that the accused are part of a sex racket, the police have intensified investigation.
Meanwhile, there are already allegations that the police and the authorities are trying to save some of the accused.
