RIYADH: “Justice will prevail” in the death of Jamal Khashoggi and no one will be allowed to drive a wedge between Saudi Arabia and Turkey, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman pledged on Wednesday.
Khashoggi’s killing was the first issue the crown prince raised after he strode on to the stage at the Future Investment Initiative conference in Riyadh.
“The incident was very painful for all Saudis. I believe it is painful for every human in the world. It was a repulsive incident, and no one can justify it,” Prince Mohammed said.
The crown prince said Saudi Arabia and Turkey would work together “to reach results” in their joint investigation into Khashoggi’s death, and he described cooperation between the two countries as “special.”
“There are now those who are trying to take advantage of this painful situation to create a rift between the Kingdom and Turkey,” he sai

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia will allow foreigners to invest in audiovisual services, land transport and real-estate brokerages, the Cabinet decided on Tuesday.
The Cabinet amended what it described as types of activity that had been previously excluded from foreign investment, after concluding its weekly meeting chaired by King Salman.
The amendment allows foreigners to invest in labor services and jobs, including recruitment offices; audio and video services; road transport services; and brokerage services for real estate.
Meanwhile, about 320 foreign institutions have registered as qualified foreign investors in the Saudi stock market, the exchange’s chairwoman told the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh.
Sarah Al-Suhaimi, chairwoman of the Saudi Arabian stock exchange (Tadawul), said 200 more are expected to register.
Global index provider MSCI classified the Saudi equity market as an emerging market in June, a move expected to attract billions of dollars of passive funds.
Al-Suhaimi said she expected the number of qualified foreign investors to increase before and after the inclusion in the index, which is expected to happen in phases coinciding with index reviews in May and August 2019.
More than 20 injured in Rome escalator collapse

ROME: More than 20 people, mainly Russian football fans, were injured Tuesday when an escalator in a metro station in central Rome collapsed, firefighters said.
Most of those hurt, one seriously, suffered leg injuries after getting entangled in the escalator’s mangled mechanics, Italian media added.
A video of the drama shows the descending escalator at Repubblica station suddenly and dramatically pick up speed with dozens of people on it, many screaming as they piled on top of one another at the foot of the moving stairway.
Media reports said witnesses spoke of football fans, seemingly drunk, jumping and dancing on the escalator just before its collapse, but supporters denied this ever happened.
“In any event, we are here to understand what happened and to offer our support to the wounded and their families,” Rome mayor Virginia Raggi told journalists at the scene.
Some of the victims were seen wrapped in blankets and some wore neck braces as they were taken away from the scene on stretchers by emergency crews.
Several investigations have been opened, and the metro station near Rome’s Termini train station was closed.
The horrific events took place around 1730 GMT, just over an hour before the kickoff of a Champions League match between Italy’s Roma and Russian club CSKA Moscow.
The Russian fans were headed for the metro that would have linked them to the train to the stadium.
There was heightened security in Rome for some 1,500 Russian supporters, notoriously rowdy, expected to watch the game.
One Russian supporter, the subject of a stadium ban, had already been stopped at the airport as he tried to enter.
But according to Italian media, this did not prevent an assortment of incidents around the stadium hosting the match. One Russian fan was stabbed with a knife, and two others were hurt in clashes with other supporters.
Roma won the group stage match 3-0, tweeting after the match that: “The thoughts of everyone at #ASRoma are with the supporters injured prior to tonight’s game. The club will do everything it can to provide the right support and assistance to those in need.”
Red-Blue World, a CSKA fan group, set up a collection fund for those injured, as well as fans hurt in violence near the stadium.
Rome’s public transport is often criticized as running on obsolete equipment.
In recent years, more than a dozen municipal buses have caught fire while in service, with several reports of metro passengers injured by malfunctioning hardware.
And a massive bridge collapse in Genoa in August — which killed 43 people — also raised safety questions about transport infrastructure in Italy.
Incidents on escalators have caused injuries, and even deaths, around the world.
In 2015, a woman was killed after she plunged through flooring over an escalator in a Chinese department store.
Security camera footage showed a panel in the floor giving way as the woman stepped off the escalator. As she fell half-way through she pushed her son forward, and a nearby shop assistant dragged him to safety.
And in March 2017, around 20 people were injured at a Hong Kong shopping center when an escalator suddenly changed direction, sending people hurtling toward its base.
World's longest sea bridge opened in China

HONG KONG: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday officially inaugurated the Hong Kong-Zhuhai sea-crossing bridge at a ceremony in Zhuhai.
It took nine years to construct the bridge which runs 55 km and connects Zhuhai in mainland China with the semi-autonomous territories of Hong Kong and Macau built over the Pearl River Delta sea. It will open to regular traffic on Wednesday, CNN reported.
The bridge is built with 400,000 tons of steel, which is 4.5 times the amount used in the construction of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge and can withstand natural calamities such as earthquakes (maximum 8.0 magnitude) and typhoons.
The structure also has a 6.7 km submerged tunnel to avoid the busy shipping paths over the Pearl River Delta. The tunnel connects two islands on reclaimed land, measuring 100,000 square metres each, situated in shallow waters.
The project, which costs USD 20 billion, was dogged by safety and land acquisition issues. With the bridge now officially flagged off, the journey time between Hong Kong and Zhuhai will take just 30 minutes, compared to three hours currently. However, critics of the megaproject asserted that the opening of the bridge is politically motivated and is a costly white elephant.
Despite the reduction of travelling time, those coming from Hong Kong will not be able to cross the bridge without a special permit. Drivers will have to park their vehicles at Hong Kong port and switch to a shuttle bus or hire special cars after clearing certain immigration procedures.
The opening of the bridge is a part of Beijing's aim to create a 'Greater Bay Area' economic hub, including Hong Kong, Macau and other prominent cities in southern China.

AMRITSAR, India: Around 60 people are now known to have died when a train plowed into a crowd of revellers watching a firework display in India, officials said Saturday.
Dozens more were hurt in the accident, some of them seriously, and overwhelmed local hospitals ran out of space for the dead, forcing them to leave some bodies outside.
The disaster, near Amritsar in the north of the country on Friday, led to new demands for safety reforms to India’s accident-plagued railway system, which records thousands of deaths each year.
Reports said the train hit scores of people who had gathered on tracks to watch the burning of a firework-packed effigy of the demon king Ravana for a Hindu festival.
Police said victims did not hear the Jalandhar-Amritsar express arriving because the noise was drowned out by firecrackers.
Another train had narrowly missed the crowds two minutes earlier, officials said.
Many bodies were badly dismembered and police said identification of the victims could take several days, officials said.
Amritsar’s main hospital did not have enough space in its morgue, and some corpses were laid outside.
Hardeep Singh, chief medical officer for Amritsar, told AFP 59 deaths had been confirmed and 90 people had been injured.
Singh said only 25 bodies had been identified so far.
Media reports said there were 61 dead.
The funerals of some victims were held Saturday and the accident brought widespread demands for tough action by authorities.
Punjab state governor V.P. Singh Badnore said: “Those who need to be punished will be punished and accountability will be fixed.”
A 2012 government report described the loss of 15,000 passengers to rail accidents every year in India as a “massacre.” The government has pledged $137 billion over five years to modernize the crumbling network.
Railway minister Piyush Goyal returned early from a trip to the United States to go to Amritsar on Saturday. Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh called off a trip to Israel to go to the disaster scene.

JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia announced on Saturday the death of missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi, saying a preliminary investigation indicated he lost his life after a fight at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
“The discussions between Jamal Khashoggi and those he met at the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul... devolved into a fistfight, leading to his death,” the Saudi Press Agency said, citing the public prosecutor.
Eighteen Saudis have been arrested in connection with the incident and the investigation is ongoing, the public prosecutor said.
“The Kingdom expresses its deep regret at the painful developments that have taken place and stresses the commitment of the authorities in the Kingdom to bring the facts to the public opinion, to hold all those involved accountable and bring them to justice,” a statement on the SPA said.
Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist who lived in the US, disappeared on Oct. 2 after visiting the consulate to complete paperwork related to his divorce.
Deputy intelligence chief Ahmed Al-Asiri was removed from his position and Saud Al-Qahtani from his advisory role at the Royal Court, through royal decrees.
Three other intelligence officials who were also sacked have been named as Mohammad bin Saleh Al-Rumaih, Abdullah bin Khalifa Al-Shaya and Rashad bin Hamed Al-Muhamadi.
King Salman also ordered the creation of a ministerial committee, headed by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, to restructure the country’s General Intelligence agency and issue the results of its work within a month.
Members of the committee include the interior and foreign ministers as well as the heads of the General Intelligence and State Security.
A team of Saudi investigators were sent to Istanbul and have been working on the case with Turkish detectives, who entered the consulate on Thursday.
Earlier in the week, Saudi Arabia promised a thorough and transparent investigation into what happened to the journalist in Turkey.
13-member Kochi girl students, Kiss of Love activists may reach Sabarimala

SABARIMALA: There are unconfirmed reports that about 13 girl students have reached Pamba with the intention to climb the holy hillock and enter the Sabarimala temple.
Police have already confirmed the presence of two members in Pamba. They are said to be students of Ernakulam Maharajas college. Intelligence wing has also reported that besides the above some Kiss of Love activists are also heading towards Sabarimala.
Police’ decision reportedly is to provide protection to women if they come up with a request for the same . But there will not be huge posse of policemen to escort them like that was seen the other day. Only one or two policemen will be sent along with them.
“If protestors block anyone’s darshan, they will be convinced of the necessity to implement law. But if they assault or verbally abuse women devotees, case will be registered against them,” a top police officer told Kerala Kaumudi.
On Friday, the police had burnt their fingers when a posse of police men were sent to escort Andhra-based Mojo TV reporter Kavitha and Model-woman activist Rahna Fathima to Sabarimala. What was worse was that police handed over their helmet and jacket to these devotees; this had made the police a butt of ridicule in media and social media.
Coming to know about the women activists’ intention, Sabarimala thantri on Friday issued a statement that the temple doors would be closed if women breach the temple tradition. Assistant priest had also started namajapa protest in front of the ‘pathinettam padi’ (flight of 18 steps to Sabarimala). Soon after this the police asked the activists to walk back.
Meanwhile, BJP State secretary K Surendran, former spokesperson V V Rajesh and Ayyappa Karma Samithi leader Swami Ayyappadas have reached the Sannidhanam with protest plans. Police have also been given instruction to exercise maximum restrain so as not to hurt the religious sentiments of devotees. [www.atozkerala.in , www.atozkerala.blogspot.com]

PATHANAMTHITTA: Devaswom Board member K P Shankar Das has said that Sabarimala Thantri is also obliged to obey the Supreme Court order, which has allowed women of all ages to enter Sabarimala temple.
Das said he disapproved of Thantri Kandararu Rajeevararu’s stand that the door of the temple will be closed if traditions are breached.
He alleged that parikarmis’ (assistant priests) protest had spoiled the sanctity of the temple.
“The thantri need not obey what Royal family members of Pandalam palace says. Sabarimala temple is not a place where thantri can close the door and go away whenever he wishes. Parikarmis have been appointed to help the chief priest.”
Meanwhile, Das said that there was conspirancy behind Rahna Fathima’s visit to Sabarimala. “The Supreme Court will be apprised of the state of affairs of Sabarimala and the door of consensus are still open,” he said.
However, Malikappuram chief priest Aneesh Namboothri has supported the thantri’s statement, saying that there was nothing wrong in what he had said.

JEDDAH: Prince Sultan bin Salman, president of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTH), has ordered the continuation of archaeological excavations at Jarash.
Excavation work will continue for 35 days with the participation of students from King Khalid University, said Mohammed Al-Umrah, director of the SCTH in the Asir region. Excavation teams at Jarash have discovered relics as old as 3,000 years.
Jarash, near Abha, is among the most important archaeological sites in Asir province. The site is one of the most important in the history of the Arabian Peninsula.
Recently, SCTH announced the registration of more than 53,000 historical artifacts and relics that it successfully managed to restore from inside and outside the Kingdom.
In 2011, Prince Sultan launched a campaign for retrieving national artifacts, including media and cultural programs and initiatives that aim to enlighten and inform citizens about the value of artifacts and the importance of returning them to the SCTH.

ALKHOBAR: After the success of the first round of the Women’s Bowling Championship in Riyadh, the second round came to Alkhobar on Oct. 13. Around 40 female competitors took part in the Al-Gosaibi Bowling Center. Participants ranging in age from 13 to 50 years old and from different backgrounds were there to express their love for bowling.
The game consisted of four rounds. In the first round all 40 competitors took part. Of these, 24 competitors made it into the second round and half their number qualified for the third. The last round had three competitors competing for first place: Ghada Nemer, Heidee Asiman and Meshael Abduljwad.
Ghada Nemer, the winner in the Women’s Bowling Championship, shares her love for bowling with her two sons, who have joined their mother bowl ever since they were children and made it onto the national bowling team. “I used to take my two sons to watch me bowl when they were young children to encourage them.” Ghada continued: “I almost couldn’t believe the first time I found out about the Bowling Championship and that women can finally participate in such tournaments! I registered immediately, my love for bowling is indescribable.”
Dr. Razan Baker, a member of board of directors at the Saudi Bowling Federation, said: “We never knew how much people loved bowling until we started the first championship in Riyadh last week. We had 200 applications in Riyadh and around 100 in Alkhobar.
“We have females coming from different fields, some of whom play football, some fence and some are just into sports and want to try it; we had people join to enjoy the sport and others who plan to be professionals.”
About the federation’s future plans Dr. Razan stated: “We get a lot of requests from different teams who started asking to be sponsored by the federation. We are willing help establish the teams that show us better scores and better determination, and put them in for more competitions around the Kingdom in the coming year.”
Shmool Alharbi, a member of the Saudi women’s bowling team that was created in March and is now being sponsored by the federation, hoped that women will get more involved in sports.
“I am happy to be part of this event to let other females here in Alkhobar, and in the Kingdom in general, know about this sport. I hope that the awareness of sports can be spread among all women through such events,” she said.
Dr. Sahar Algosaibi, the head of the property department in Algosaibi, shared her story of collaboration with the Saudi Bowling Federation to empower women in sports as part of corporate social responsibility: “We work and aim to spread the word about sports between women, provide logistic support through well-prepared facilities and expand the field of sports for women in different sports, not only bowling.”

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: Malaysian police say eight suspected militants, including seven foreigners, have been arrested for allegedly spreading religious extremism that could threaten national security and fan terrorism in the region.
National police chief Mohamad Fuzi Harun says the suspects are connected with an Islamic religious school in Yemen that promotes teachings that permit the killings of non-Muslims and even Muslims who don’t follow their ways and denounce democracy as un-Islamic.
He said Friday the foreigners include five people from a country in Europe, one from the Americas and one from the Middle East.
He said the Sept. 24 arrests came after police received intelligence that a Yemen-based terror group was planning to set up a school in Southeast Asia to promote their ideology, which is shared by groups like the Islamic State.

LONDON: Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said the flotation of Saudi Aramco would proceed by 2021, Bloomberg reported on Friday.
He made the disclosure in a wide-ranging interview with the newswire conducted at the royal palace in Riyadh on Wednesday.
It also touched on his relationship with Donald Trump, plans to invest a further $45 billion in Softbank, the rising oil price, and production of crude along the Saudi border with Kuwait.
His comments bring clarity to what could be the most talked about initial public offering in corporate history and one that is a key plank of the Vision 2030 economic and social reform agenda.
“I believe late 2020, early 2021,” he said, referring to the timing of the IPO. “The investor will decide the price on the day. I believe it will be above $2 trillion. Because it will be huge.”
Saudi Arabia has been planning to float up to 5 percent of Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest national oil company, on the stock market.
In recent months there had been intense media speculation over whether the planned IPO had been delayed, canceled or replaced with a rival deal involving Aramco purchasing Saudi Basic Industries Corporation, the petrochemical giant better known as SABIC.
The Saudi crown prince told Bloomberg that the Saudi government would retain the shares of Aramco after the IPO, instead of transferring them into the sovereign wealth fund as originally planned.
Instead, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) would receive the $70 billion from the sale of its stake in SABIC, plus the $100 billion that country hopes to raise from the Aramco IPO, Bloomberg reported.

The interview took place against a backdrop of market concerns over the rising price of oil, caused in part by the reimposition of US sanctions against Iran.
US president Donald Trump has in recent weeks stepped up pressure on OPEC and Saudi Arabia to pump more crude and help to lower the price of oil.
However, the crown prince stressed that the oil price was determined by market forces rather than the actions of Saudi Arabia.
“We never in the history of Saudi Arabia decided that this is the right or wrong oil price,” he said.
“The oil price depends on trade — consumer and supplier — and they decide the oil price based on trade and supply and demand. What we are committed in Saudi Arabia is to make sure there is no shortage of supply. So we work with our allies in OPEC and also non-OPEC countries to be sure that we have a sustainable supply of oil and there is no shortage and that there is good demand, that it will not create problems for the consumers and their plans and development.”
He also clarified that Saudi Arabia had spare capacity of 1.3 million barrels without the need for further investment.
“So in Saudi Arabia we have 1.3 million to go if the market needs that. And with other OPEC countries and non-OPEC countries we believe we have more than that, a little bit more than that. And of course there is opportunity for investment in the next three to five years,” he said.
The Bloomberg interview also touched on future oil production in the so-called Saudi-Kuwait neutral zone — an undefined border area between the two countries.
“There are only small issues that have been stuck there for the last 50 years. The Kuwaiti side, they want to fix it today, before we continue to produce in that area,” he said. “It’s part of the sovereignty issues that are stuck, unsolved, between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait for the past 50 years. And they want to fix it now before we continue to produce from that area. We think a 50-year-old issue is almost impossible to fix in a few weeks. So we’re trying to have an agreement with the Kuwaitis to continue to produce for the next five to 10 years and at the same time, we work on the sovereignty issues.”
The interview also covered recent reports about planned financial aid from Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Kuwait for neighboring Bahrain.
“We cannot walk away from GCC countries. It (the financial package) will cover Bahrain’s needs over five years. We believe they’ve taken really serious reforms in the past year. We believe they’ve made huge progress. They have a super amazing team. I told the Bahraini king and the Bahraini crown prince if you fire any of the people in Bahrain we will hire them next day," he said.

DUBAI: Animal welfare workers across Saudi Arabia are being inundated with daily requests to take on unwanted dogs and cats as they say pet abandonment across the Kingdom is at record highs.
Nour Fetyani, a Saudi, is the adoption coordinator for Open Paws Jeddah, a team of volunteers who rescue and re-home Jeddah’s abandoned dogs. She works around-the-clock to find forever homes for abandoned dogs.
“It (animal abandonment) is increasing; it is phone calls to us, it is contacting us via WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook,” she said. “I would say it is every other day, if not daily.”
Animal owners, she said, often have the same reasons for giving up pets: Neighbors who have complained about dogs barking, new-found allergies or a change in family circumstances.
Others, she said, simply do not want to spend the time taking care of the animals they bought. Fetyani said that a lack of foresight is often a big contributing factor.
‘I love working with’ Trump, relationship with US unchanged: Saudi crown prince

JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia’s crown prince said relations with the US are still strong despite comments by Donald Trump that the Kingdom must pay for American military support.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said: “Actually we will pay nothing for our security.” The Kingdom pays for all its military equipment from the US, he said: “We believe that all the armaments we have from the United States of America are paid for, it’s not free armament.”
Since the beginning of Saudi-US relations “we’ve bought everything with money,” the crown prince told a group of Bloomberg reporters on Wednesday.
Saudi Arabia changed its military spending strategy after Donald Trump was elected president in 2016, with 60% of spending with the US over a decade, the prince said.
“That’s why we’ve created the $400 billion in opportunities, armaments and investment opportunities, and other trade opportunities,” which Prince Mohammed said was a good achievement for both countries.
The various deals, which were signed in 2017 when President Trump made Saudi Arabia his first overseas visit, means that “part of these armaments will be manufactured in Saudi Arabia, so it will create jobs in America and Saudi Arabia, good trade, good benefits for both countries and also good economic growth. Plus, it will help our security,” he said.
“I love working with him. I really like working with him and we have achieved a lot in the Middle East, especially against extremism, extremist ideologies, terrorism and Daesh,” said the crown prince.
President Trump and King Salman launched a global counter terror center in Riyadh during his visit to the country.
Prince Mohammed visited Washington in March where the president hailed the links between the two allies. “The relationship is probably the strongest it’s ever been,” Trump said at a joint press conference.
“We have huge investments between both countries. We have good improvement in our trade – a lot of achievements, so this is really great,” the prince said on Wednesday.
The US-Saudi efforts, along with global partners, have pushed back extremists and terrorists and countered Iran’s “negative moves in the Middle East in a good way,” he told the publication.
On the topic of controlling oil prices, the crown prince said the Kingdom has never “decided that this is the right or wrong oil price. The oil price depends on trade – consumer and supplier – and they decide the oil price based on trade and supply and demand.
What we are committed in Saudi Arabia is to make sure there is no shortage of supply. So we work with our allies in OPEC and also non-OPEC countries to be sure that we have a sustainable supply of oil and there is no shortage and that there is good demand, that it will not create problems for the consumers and their plans and development,” he said.
Prince Mohammed confirmed that Trump did make a request to Saudi Arabia and OPEC to replace whatever may be lost of supply from Iran. “And that happened. Because recently, Iran reduced their exports by 700,000 barrels a day, if I’m not mistaken. And Saudi Arabia and OPEC and non-OPEC countries, they’ve produced 1.5 million barrels a day. So we export as much as 2 barrels for any barrel that disappeared from Iran recently. So we did our job and more. We believe the higher price that we have in the last month, it’s not because of Iran. It’s mostly because of things happening in Canada, and Mexico, Libya, Venezuela and other countries that moved the price a little bit higher. But Iran, definitely no. Because they reduced 700,000 barrels and we’ve exported more than 1.5 million barrels a day,” the crown prince said.
When asked about diplomatic issues with Germany and Canada and how that differed from what Trump said, the prince replied: “It’s totally different. Canada, they gave an order to Saudi Arabia on an internal issue. It’s not an opinion of Canada about Saudi Arabia as much as they are giving an order to a different country. So we believe this is a totally different issue. Trump is speaking to his own people inside the United States of America about an issue.”

Adultery is not a crime, Section 497 of IPC unconstitutional: SC

NEW DELHI: Mere adultery can't be a crime unless it attracts the scope of Section 306 (abatement to suicide) of the IPC, the Supreme Court said on Thursday.
"Adultery can be ground for civil issues including dissolution of marriage but it cannot be a criminal offence," the apex court said.
On the petition challenging the validity of Section 497 (Adultery) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), CJI Dipak Misra said, "The magnificent beauty of the democracy is I, you and we. Equality is the governing principle of a system. Husband is not the master of the wife. Women must be treated with equality. Any discrimination shall invite the wrath of Constitution. Section 497 IPC which deals with Adultery is absolutely manifestly arbitrary."
Section 497 of the 158-year-old IPC says: "Whoever has sexual intercourse with a person who is and whom he knows or has reason to believe to be the wife of another man, without the consent or connivance of that man, such sexual intercourse not amounting to the offence of rape, is guilty of the offence of adultery."
On January 5, the apex court had referred to a five-judge constitution bench the plea challenging the validity of the penal law on adultery. The court had taken a prima facie view that though the criminal law proceeded on "gender neutrality", the concept was absent in Section 497.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Noted singer Singer Vidhu Pratap visited Ananthapuri hospital where violinist Balabhaskar remains critical post-surgery.
Vithu said that Balu had sustained backbone injury. "Bones in other parts of the body have also have cracked. Surgeries on Balu and wife Lekshmi were successful but doctors said they would be able to assess the condition only after 24 hours. In the morning his blood pressure was low, which hindered the operation but by evening it was normal. We all friends reached the hospital morning itsefl," he said.
Balabhaskar, his wife, Lakshmi, and driver Arjun had been admitted in the hospital; however her baby girl had died soon after the accident.
Dr Marthandan Pillai of the Neurology Department at Ananthapuri Hospital, who performed the surgery said that the singer’s condition could only be assessed in a few days time.
“Balabhaskar is very critical. He has sustained multiple organ failure and there are multiple fractures in his legs. His neck was dislocated and in order to correct this, we took him up for surgery,” said Dr Marthandan Pillai, “He is currently on ventilator support as his lungs are severely damaged. We cannot say what the condition is at present. We will monitor him for a few days and see.”
He further added that the singer’s wife Lakshmi is out of danger but has sustained multiple fractures in different parts of the body.
The singer-musician and his family met with an accident at Pallipuram, near his home town of Thiruvananthapuram, in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The couple and their 2-year-old daughter, Tejasvini, were on the way back from a temple trip in Thrissur when the car crashed into a tree.
While the couple was rushed to a nearby hospital, Tejasvini, sadly could not be saved.
Their driver, Arjun, too was reported to have sustained minor injuries. As per Mangalapuram police, who tended to the accident, there were suspicions that the driver may have dozed off on the way back, causing him to ram into the tree.

Pak won't abandon peace efforts despite India's reluctance: Qureshi

WASHINGTON: India's reluctance to hold talks with Pakistan will not stop Islamabad from closing doors on its efforts to promote peace in the region, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has said, days after New Delhi cancelled the foreign minister-level meeting in New York.
Addressing a news conference at the Pakistan Embassy in Washington on Sunday, Qureshi said India used incidents that happened in July to cancel peace talks that it agreed to in September.
India on Friday cited the "brutal" killing of three policemen in Jammu and Kashmir as well as the release of the postal stamps "glorifying" Kashmiri militant Burhan Wani for calling off the meeting between External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and her Pakistani counterpart Qureshi on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York this month.
"India is reluctant, we will not close our doors," Qureshi said.
"Hiding away from issues will not make them disappear. It will not improve the situation in Kashmir," he was quoted as saying by the 'Dawn' newspaper.
The foreign minister said he was unable to understand India's refusal to participate in peace talks with Pakistan.
"Engagement, no-engagement. Coming, not coming. We desired talks as we believe the sensible way is to meet and talk. They agreed, and then disagreed," he said.
Qureshi said India's response to Pakistan's peace offer was harsh and non-diplomatic.
"We did not use a non-diplomatic language in our rejoinder. Our response was matured and measured. They adopted a new approach, and moved back," he said.
The foreign minister also alleged that Swaraj's "language and tone was unbecoming of a foreign minister", the report said.
Asked if tensions between India and Pakistan could lead to a war between the two countries, Qureshi said "Who is talking of war? Not us. We want peace, stability, employment and improving lives. You identify where is the reluctance".
Qureshi said that Pakistan's desire for peace should not be mistaken for a sign of weakness.
"We want peace. It does not mean, we cannot defend ourselves against aggression. We can but we do not have an aggressive mindset," he said.
Qureshi also rejected India's concerns over the release of a postal stamps "glorifying" a slain Kashmiri militant, "hundreds of thousands of people are fighting in Kashmir, not all of them are terrorists".
The foreign minister also reiterated Pakistan's offer to open the Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara corridor for allowing Sikh pilgrims from India to visit the historic gurdwara on the 550th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev.
India initially agreed to a meeting between Swaraj and Qureshi, but later said it would would be "meaningless" to hold talks after the "two deeply disturbing" developments.
Ties between India and Pakistan nosedived following a spate of terror attacks on Indian military bases by Pakistan-based terror groups since January 2016.
Following the strikes, India announced it will not engage in talks with Pakistan, saying terror and talks cannot go hand-in-hand.
Trump's latest tariffs on China begin to bite

WASHINGTON:President Donald Trump's latest round of punitive tariffs on China took effect on Monday, adding 200 billion in Chinese imports to the escalating trade war that is clouding the global economic horizon.
The new attack on Beijing brings the amount of goods hit by duties to more than 250 billion, roughly half of Chinese exports to the United States, and increasingly consumers will feel the pain in their wallets directly.
Trump has hit 12 percent of total US imports this year alone.
Defiant in the face of increasing fears about the impact to the US economy, Trump has threatened to go after 100 percent of imports from China if the country refuses to change policies he says harm US industry, particularly the theft of American technology.
"These practices plainly constitute a grave threat to the long-term health and prosperity of the United States economy," he said in announcing the tariffs last week.
"We are going to win it," his Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told "Fox News Sunday." "We're going to get an outcome which forces China to behave in a way that if you want to be a power -- a global power -- transparency, rule of law, you don't steal intellectual property." Beijing has promised to strike back on Monday with duties on 60 billion in American goods, bringing the total to 110 billion, nearly everything China buys from the United States.
But Trump warned he could ramp up to "phase three," slapping tariffs on approximately 267 billion of additional imports, or the entirety of the goods the US buys from China.
Dialogue between the world's two biggest economies appears severed. Beijing cancelled the visit of a Chinese negotiating team expected September 27-28 in Washington, The Wall Street Journal said.
Previous talks in late August were ineffective.
In that context, the International Monetary Fund has warned about the potential for "significant economic costs," including slower growth.
"Should the escalation go further, the economic costs for both countries and around the world will quickly add up," IMF spokesman Gerry Rice said last week.
Meanwhile, Fitch Ratings has cut its growth estimates for China and the world for 2019.
"Protectionist US trade policies have now reached the point where they are materially affecting what remains a strong global growth outlook," Fitch said in a report Friday.
The latest round of Chinese imports will face 10 percent tariffs through the end of the year, and then the rate will jump to 25 percent.
A broad swath of products are on the hit list, including billions in Chinese-made voice data receivers, computer memory modules, automatic data processors, and accessories for office equipment such as copiers and banknote dispensers -- instantly making widely used goods more expensive.
However, following complaints from thousands of US firms -- including powerhouses like Apple and Walmart -- 300 product lines were dropped from the target list.
The products spared also include smartwatches and Bluetooth devices, like the iPhone and Fitbit, child safety products such as high chairs, car seats and playpens, and certain health-and-safety products such as bicycle helmets, US officials said.
The removal of smartwatches and wireless headphones represents a win for tech giant Apple, just days after it unveiled its latest smartwatch and three new iPhones as part of a bid to fight back after slipping to third place among smartphone makers.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court Tuesday held that all candidates will have to declare their criminal antecedents to the Election Commission before contesting an election, saying criminalisation of politics of the largest democracy is "unsettling".
A five-judge Constitution bench, headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, said that citizens have a right to be informed about the antecedents of their candidates.
In the unanimous verdict, the bench, also comprising Justices R F Nariman, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Indu Malhotra, said that political parties are obligated to put all the information about their candidates on their websites.
It asked the legislature to consider framing a law to ensure decriminalisation of politics.
The bench said that informed choice is the corner stone of democracy and termed criminalisation of politics of the largest democracy as "unsettling".
The apex court favoured wider publicity, through print and electronic media about the antecedents of candidates affiliated to political parties.
The verdict was pronounced on a batch of pleas raising a question whether lawmakers facing criminal trial can be disqualified from contesting elections at the stage of framing of charges against them.
The status before the filing of these petitions was that lawmakers were barred under the Representation of Peoples (RP) Act from contesting elections only after their conviction in a criminal case.
The verdict was reserved on August 28.

- A Dubai-based humanitarian relief group has paired up with one in the UK to distribute toys made from upcycled refugee blankets
- It’s one initiative marking the UN’s International Day of Peace on Friday, at a time when the world is in conflict
DUBAI: Eight-year-old Anjuman, living in Camp 7 at Kutupalong refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, has received the most beautiful gift. “I am very happy to have received this dove. I like it so much,” she said.
She is among 150 children in the camp who have received “peace doves” from Dubai after winning an art competition organized in the camp.
To celebrate the UN-declared International Day of Peace on Friday, a Dubai-based humanitarian relief group, NRS International, and a UK-based NGO, Empathy Action, have given wings to a message of hope, peace and reconciliation.
Both these organizations have come together to make dove toys (symbolizing peace) to distribute among children, who are among the first victims of conflict in any part of the world.
And while peace isn’t something the world often associates with the Middle East, there are plenty of ways in which countries in the region are trying to make the world a better place, from smaller initiatives such as the doves in Bangladesh to major efforts such as the peace deal brokered this week by Saudi Arabia between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
The peace doves were handmade by women at NRS International’s factory in Pakistan. As many as 650 dove toys have been stitched and handcrafted from upcycled offcuts of refugee blankets and tarpaulins.

900,000 fireworks, 300 drones: Record-breaking celebration in Saudi Arabia

JEDDAH: Saudis came together on Sunday for the grandest national celebration yet.
With 900,000 fireworks set off simultaneously from 58 platforms across 20 cities in the Kingdom, the General Entertainment Authority (GEA) is aiming to make the Guinness World Records for the largest fireworks display.
According to Guinness, the record to beat is the Philippines New Year celebrations in 2016, with 810,904 fireworks, which lasted just over an hour in the pouring rain. That beat previous records set by Dubai in 2014 and Kuwait the year before.
But if that’s not enough, the GEA has its bases covered. Nothing says patriotism like the flag, and so it is also planning to set another record by creating the largest national flag, measuring 400 meters by 350 meters, in the air by using lasers on 300 drones to trace the sword and the Shahada on the green backdrop of the fireworks.
The fireworks display was accompanied by national music for this occasion, which was supervised by Prince Badr bin Abdul Mohsin, the country’s first Minister of Culture, for more than 20 cities in the Kingdom. The main fireworks show lasted for 15 minutes, with 10 performances in some small- and medium-sized cities and 45 secondary performances.
The weekend was painted in all shades of green, as celebrations across the Kingdom started on Friday, and the flag was seen in all shapes and sizes. Men, women and children wore green as they set out to enjoy the many events arranged for the people to have the best National Day.
