Atletico de Kolkata inaugural ISL champions; beat Kerala Blasters 1-0

Mumbai: Substitute Mohammad Rafique headed in an injury time header as Atletico De Kolkata clinched the inaugural Indian Super League crown with a 1-0 win over Kerala Blasters here Saturday.

Rafique, who replaced Mohammad Rafi in the 74th minute of the mega clash at the packed D.Y. Patil stadium, followed up a corner from Czech defender Jakub Podany to fire the header in the 94th minute, a minute before the second half injury time was slated to end to send ATK fans into raptures here as also in Kolkata and other parts of the world.

Rafique - later adjudged hero of the match - ran into the box, outjumped rival defender Nirmal Chetri and put the ball into the net past Blasters' veteran custodian- cum-coach David James to decide the fate of the game which seemed poised to roll into extra time.

It was a revenge of sorts for the Sourav Ganguly co-owned ATK, which had lost 1-2 to the Blasters in Kochi in the return leg of the round robin stage. The two sides had finished 1-1 in the first leg.

We have killed all the children...What do we do now?:attackers

________ A to Z kerala .......... [kvk] [www.atozkerala.in , www.atozkerala.blogspot.com]

PESHAWAR:  "We have killed all the children in the auditorium...What do we do now?" one of the Taliban attackers told his handler after shooting indiscriminately at the students in the main hall of the army-run school from where more than 100 bodies were recovered.

"Wait for the army people, kill them before blowing yourself," his handler ordered, instructing the suicide attackers who were executing one of the most gruesome attacks against children in recent history.

Citing a security official, the Dawn said it was one of the last conversations between the attackers and their handler on Tuesday shortly before two remaining suicide bombers charged towards the commandos positioned just outside the side entrance of the Army Public School's administration block.

"This and other conversations between the attackers and their handlers during the entire siege of seven and a half hours of the school form part of an intelligence dossier Army Chief Gen Raheel Sharif shared with Afghan authorities" during his emergency visit yesterday, the paper said.

Pakistan has identified the attackers and it got the transcripts of the conversation between one of them named 'Abuzar', and his handler, 'commander' Umar, the paper said.

"Umar Adizai, also known as Umar Naray and Umar Khalifa, is a senior militant from the Frontier Region Peshawar," it said, adding that security officials believe he made the calls from Nazian district of Afghanistan's Nangrahar province.

Officials said 16 top Taliban militants, including its chief Mullah Fazlullah, planned the Peshawar massacre that killed 148 people, including 132 students, in the worst terrorist attack in the history of Pakistan.

The officials believe that out of seven attackers, five militants blew themselves up inside the administration block and two others outside it, the paper said.

Citing officials, Dawn said the attackers entered the building by climbing its rear wall, using a ladder and cutting barbed wire. They then stormed the main auditorium where an instructor was giving a first-aid lesson to senior students.

"Did the attackers have prior knowledge of the congregation in the main hall... This is one of the questions we are trying to find an answer to," a security official said.
The militants first shot dead a watchman standing at the rear of the auditorium.

Finding the rear door closed, they moved towards the two main entry and exit doors and this is where the main carnage appears to have taken place, the paper said, quoting a military officer who took part in the counter-assault.

"There were piles of bodies, most dead, some alive. Blood everywhere. I wish I had not seen this," the officer said.

The students in the hall appear to have rushed to leave the place after hearing the first round of shooting, and this was where they barged into the waiting militants who were blocking the two doors.

Inside the main hall, there was blood everywhere, almost on every inch of it. Shoes of students and women teachers lay asunder. Those who had hid behind rows of seats were shot -- one by one, in the head, the paper said.

"More than 100 bodies and injured were evacuated from the entrances and the hall," it added.

Security officials believe the death toll could have been far higher had the militants reached the junior section before the arrival of the special commandos.

"Four of the militants blew themselves up inside the lobby of the administration block when they were cornered. The impact was huge and devastating. There were pockmarks from the flying ball bearings and human flesh and hair were plastered to the ceiling and the walls," the paper said.

One of the bombers blew himself up in the office of Headmistress Tahira Qazi, whose body was recognised later. A leg of the bomber was lying around.

Two students and three staff members were killed in the administration block along with the headmistress.

The last two bombers moved towards the commandos who had taken positions on either side of the flank entrance to the block.

One of them exploded himself and after a while, the second one did, injuring some commandos.

A daily cup of black tea relieves stomach ulcer

Research conducted by The Institute of Chemical Biology suggests that a daily cup of black tea can help to tackle the risk of stomach ulcer, which is the result of excessive drinking.

Earlier research have indicated that black tea could empower the immunity power of human beings.

'Habitual drinking adversely affects human liver which gradually ends up as stomach ulcer. And as the ulcer progresses, the body becomes incapable of fighting the disease. And liquid factors in the black tea react with the proteins in the body and impart immunity to the system thereby reviving the destroyed cells of the liver,' said Anirban Roy, scientist at the Bio- technology Department in Kolkata, in an International conference.

Obama announces new Cuba policy to normalise relations

________ A to Z kerala .......... [kvk] [www.atozkerala.in , www.atozkerala.blogspot.com]
Washington: US President Barack Obama Wednesday announced a historical, new policy toward Cuba, in a move to normalise relations and end more than five decades of estrangement between the two countries.

'We will end an outdated approach that for decades has failed to advance our interests,' Obama said in an address at the White House. 'Instead we will begin to normalise relations between our two countries.'

Obama said he had instructed Secretary of State John Kerry to initiate talks with Cuba on restoring diplomatic relations with the island country, and to review Cuba's designation as a state sponsor of terrorism. He added that the US will reestablish an embassy in Havana, the Cuban capital, and high-ranking officials will visit Cuba, Xinhua reported.

The US is also taking steps to increase travel, commerce and the flow of information to and from Cuba, said Obama, adding that he also looked forward to engaging Congress in discussion about lifting the embargo the US has imposed on Cuba.

These changes will 'begin a new chapter among the nations of the Americas,' and move beyond 'a rigid policy that is rooted in events that took place before most of us were born,' the US president said.

Wednesday's announcement came after Obama spoke with Cuban leader Raul Castro by telephone Tuesday, the first direct contact between the leaders of the two nations in more than 50 years.

Earlier Wednesday, Cuba released Alan Gross, an American subcontractor it had held in captivity in five years on humanitarian grounds. Obama said Gross's imprisonment had been the obstacle for the US to make major policy changes toward Cuba.

Gross's release was the result of months' discussion between the two governments, said Obama, adding that Pope Francis issued a personal appeal urging leaders of the two countries to resolve the case.

On Wednesday, Cuba also released an important US intelligence agent who has been imprisoned for 20 years.

In the address, Obama admitted that more than 50 years of isolation policy on Cuba 'has not worked,' saying that 'it's time for a new approach'.

'Today, America chooses to cut loose the shackles of the past so as to reach for a better future,' he added.

Cuban President Raul Castro said the two countries have agreed to the 're-establishment of diplomatic relations,' which were broken in 1961, and have made a commitment to 'take mutual measures to improve the bilateral climate,' EFE reported.

Even though Washington and Havana have agreed to move forward and normalise relations, 'this does not mean that the principal (issue) has been resolved,' Castro said, calling for an end to the US 'economic, trade and financial blockade that causes enormous human and economic damage'.

The Cuban leader called on the US in this new atmosphere of dialogue to 'remove the obstacles that prevent or restrict the links between our peoples,' especially those relating to travel, direct mail service and telecommunications.

Pakistan Army Chief signs death warrants for six militants

________ A to Z kerala .......... [kvk] [www.atozkerala.in , www.atozkerala.blogspot.com]
Islamabad: Pakistan's military chief on Thursday signed death warrants for six militants on death row after the government ended a moratorium on capital punishment in terror-related cases, the military said.

'COAS (Chief of Army Staff) today signed death warrants of 6 hardcore terrorists (pending execution) convicted by FGCM in accordance with law,' military spokesman Major General Asim Bajwa tweeted.

Security officials said the six were convicted by a military court and were awaiting execution.

The announcement came hours after the government warned prison officials of a possible jailbreak in the restive northwest province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa following the end of the moratorium.

It is not clear when the executions will be carried out but a senior security official said the six would be hanged 'within days'.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif announced on Wednesday an end to the moratorium on the death penalty in terror-related cases after a Pakistani Taliban massacre at a military-run school killed 148 people, mostly children.

The assault in the northwestern city of Peshawar is the deadliest ever terror attack in Pakistan and has shocked the nation.

Political and military leaders have vowed in response to wipe out the homegrown Islamist insurgency that has killed thousands of ordinary Pakistanis in recent years.

Pakistan imposed a de facto moratorium on civilian executions in 2008, though hanging remains on the statute book and judges continue to pass the death sentence.

Only one person has been executed since then, a soldier convicted by a court martial and hanged in November 2012.

Rights campaign group Amnesty International estimates that Pakistan has more than 8,000 prisoners on death row, most of whom have exhausted the appeals process.AFP

26/11 mastermind Lakhvi gets bail, shocked India asks Pakistan to act

________ A to Z kerala .......... [kvk] [www.atozkerala.in , www.atozkerala.blogspot.com]
Islamabad/New Delhi : An anti-terrorism court in Islamabad Thursday granted bail to Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, a key mastermind of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, triggering shock and indignation in India which asked Pakistan to take steps to reverse the decision.

Lakhvi's lawyer Rizwan Abbasi appeared before the court and sought bail for his client. Federal Investigation Agency's (FIA) prosecutor disagreed with the bail plea, Dawn online reported.

The court directed Lakhvi, among the seven people charged with planning and helping to carry out the Nov 26, 2008 Mumbai terror attack which left at least 166 people dead, to pay surety bonds worth Pakistani Rs.500,000 before he can be released on bail.

At the time of the 26/11 attack, Lakhvi was believed to be the operational head of the banned Laskhar-e-Taiba (LeT) that is accused by India of carrying out the attack in its financial capital.

The news about Lakhvi's bail led to expressions of shock in India, especially as it came a day after parliamentarians and school children across India observed two minutes silence over the Peshawar school terror attack and many also held candle light marches to denounce the killing of over 130 children.

On Wednesday, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif pronounced that Islamabad would henceforth not differentiate between 'good' terrorists and 'bad' terrorists. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendara Modi spoke to Sharif to condemn the attack and offered to provide all assistance.Home

Minister Rajnath Singh, reacting to the news of the bail, said it was 'very unfortunate, and believe it should not have happened,' and added that the evidence provided by India to Pakistan on the Mumbai terror case was 'more than enough to nail him'.

He said the Pakistan government should appeal in a higher court and get the bail cancelled.

The external affairs ministry, in a strong statement, said the bail granted to Lakhvi would 'serve as a reassurance to terrorists who perpetrate heinous crimes' and called up Pakistan to immediately take steps to reverse the decision.

It said 'Given the scale of the tragedy that Pakistan itself has faced in recent days, it is incumbent on it to realise that no compromise can ever be made with terrorists', and that 'There can be no selective approaches to terrorism'.

Indian political leaders, cutting across party lines, Thursday condemned the bail to Lakhvi and expressed doubts whether Pakistan was 'serious enough' in its fight against terror.

'The fight against terror cannot be duplicitous, seeking to differentiate between the ones who operate in India and others who attack in Pakistan,' BJP leader Nalin Kohli told IANS.

'The case of Hafiz Saeed and Lakhvi confirms complete non-serious approach by which Pakistan seeks to deny justice for the victims of Mumbai terror attacks,' he said.

Senior BJP leader L.K. Advani also termed the bail order 'very shocking', especially coming after the Peshawar attack.

The Congress said it was the responsibility of Pakistan to 'ensure justice' to the victims of Mumbai attack.

'We have given all evidence against the perpetrators of the 26/11 attack to Pakistani establishment and it is imperative that the prosecutor ensure justice to the victims,' said the party's Sanjay Jha.

'It is Pakistan government's responsibility to ensure that people like Lakhvi and Hafiz Saeed, who roam freely there making speeches against India are stopped and immediate action is taken against them,' Jha told IANS.

Former union minister Shashi Tharoor also termed the bail 'truly shocking'.

The Aam Aadmi Party also said Pakistan should get Lakhvi's bail cancelled.

Ujjwal Nikam, public prosecutor in the Mumbai terror attack case, termed it as 'very shocking' news. Nikam said that Lakhvi was being tried in the case since 2008 and 'when the court says no evidence it means that our case has not been properly represented in the court'.

'If Pakistan wants to fight terrorism, they should fight terrorist who are inside the state,' he added.

Former Indian high commissioner to Pakistan, G. Parthasarathy told IANS he is not surprised in least' at the development.

'The LeT enjoys not only patronage of the Pakistani army but also Prime Minister (Nawaz) Sharif, who has had a long time relationship with Hafiz Saeed extending for years; and he received patronage I know when I was high commissioner from then prime minister Sharif, and even now in his third term, his brother Shahbaz Sharif, the chief minister of Punjab, is funding the Lashkar.'

'You can draw your conclusions from this,' he said.

230 bodies found in mass grave in Syria

Damascus: More than 230 bodies of people believed to have been killed by the Sunni radical group Islamic State (IS) were found in a mass grave in Syria's Deir al-Zour province, a media report said Wednesday.

The bodies are believed to be belonging to the members of a tribe that fought the IS, BBC reported citing the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Last month, the UN said it had received reports of a massacre in the Syrian province in August. Investigators said that the IS executed the Sheitat tribesmen in a struggle for control of oil resources near the town of Mohassan.

In early November, IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi reportedly allowed members of the tribe to return to their homes. They were told to surrender all weapons and inform on all 'apostates' to the group.

All 'traitors' would be killed, Baghdadi warned in a statement.

The Syrian Observatory said that it had been informed by a trusted source that the 230 bodies had been found by returning members of the Sheitat in a mass grave in the desert near the village of Kashkiya, in eastern Deir al-Zou

Pak army retaliates to Peshawar attack, kills 57 militants
Pakistan army retaliated to the the deadly Taliban attack at Peshawar school by killing 57 militants in massive airstrikes in the Khyber tribal region where the suicide bombers were reportedly trained.

The army launched 20 airstrikes on Wednesday on several Taliban hideouts in Tirah valley area of Khyber tribal region which is adjacent to Peshawar and killed 57 militants, an army spokesman said.

The strikes were launched after reports that militants involved in the Peshawar army school attack in which 148 people, including 132 school children were killed, were trained in the Bara area of Khyber.

The military said that the ongoing operation Khyber-1 in the district is being reviewed.

Pakistan had on Wednesday pledged to announce a 'national plan' to tackle terrorism within a week with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif saying 'this entire region' should be cleaned of terrorism.

Taliban spokesman claimed that its 6 suicide bombers attacked the army school, saying it was a revenge for the military's operation against militants in the North Waziristan tribal area close to Peshawar.

The security forces have killed hundreds of militants in the region but they are still far from defeated.

The militants hide in the mountainous porous border and frequently cross towards Afghanistan to avoid attacks.

Six killed in Taliban suicide attack on Afghan bank

KANDAHAR: Taliban militants detonated a suicide bomb and stormed a bank in southern Afghanistan today, killing at least six people as the country endures a rise in violence while US-led NATO troops pull out.

The attackers forced their way inside after the bomb exploded at the entrance of the Kabul Bank branch in Lashkar Gah, the capital of the insurgency-racked province of Helmand.

"The blast at the gate was a suicide attacker blowing himself up to open the way for others to enter the building," Omar Zhwak, provincial spokesman for Helmand, told AFP.

"The fighting is still ongoing. Our latest report show six people, including three police, have been killed and seven wounded.

"One attacker was also killed and two are still resisting.
"It was the government employees' payday and they had all come to get their salaries."
Farid Ahmad Obaidi, Helmand's police spokesman, confirmed the incident, which comes as Afghanistan police and army take over security duties nationwide.

Officials were unable to confirm if any civilians were trapped inside the branch.

A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the attack on Kabul Bank, an institution that nearly collapsed in 2010 in a USD 900 million fraud case that underlined endemic corruption in Afghanistan.

On December 31, the NATO combat mission in Afghanistan will end after 13 years of fighting the Taliban.

It will be replaced by a 12,500-strong support mission to advise and assist the Afghan security forces.

Recent deadly attacks have targeted army buses, mine clearance teams and foreign compounds in Kabul.

Marines row: Italy threatens to withdraw its ambassador from India

________ A to Z kerala .......... [kvk] [www.atozkerala.in , www.atozkerala.blogspot.com]
ROME: Rome threatened to withdraw its ambassador from India on Wednesday as a diplomatic row over two Italian marines accused of killing Indian fishermen during an anti-piracy mission escalated.
The soldiers say they fired on the two fishermen after mistaking them for pirates while guarding an Italian oil tanker off the southern Indian state of Kerala in 2012.
They had been living in the Italian embassy in the Indian capital while they waited to be tried, and were not supposed to leave the country.
But the Indian Supreme Court gave marine Massimiliano Latorre leave to spend four months at home after he suffered a cerebral ischaemia -- a restricted blood supply that can lead to a stroke -- in September.
On Tuesday it rejected Latorre's request to extend his leave to undergo further treatment in January, and refused to allow his co-accused Salvatore Girone to return home to see his family for Christmas.
But Italy's foreign minister Paolo Gentiloni hit back strongly at the court's decision.
"Faced with such an attitude by the Indian authorities, the government reserves the right to take all necessary measures, starting with the recall of the Italian ambassador from New Delhi, although that would not mean breaking off diplomatic relations," he told a parliamentary committee.
Defence Minister Roberta Pinotti said Latorre's health "is the government's priority and nothing will be done to put it in danger", hinting that Rome could break its promise to return him to India.
The marines were granted a home visit to vote in national elections last year, but India was furious when the Italian government initially said it would not send the men back.
A subsequent U-turn, which followed intense Indian diplomatic pressure, triggered the resignation of Italy's then foreign minister.
Italy has been contesting India's right to try the men in the courts since March.
It maintains that the pair should be tried on home soil since the shootings involved an Italian-flagged vessel in what Rome says were international waters. But India insists the shooting took place in its waters.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court Thursday extended by four months the bail of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in a disproportionate assets case and asked the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court to constitute a special bench to decide her plea expeditiously within three months.
A bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu ordered that the hearing in the high court on the appeal filed by the AIADMK Chief challenging her conviction and sentence in the case, be conducted on a day-to-day basis.
"Keeping in view the facts of the case, we request the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court to constitute a special bench for hearing of appeal on day-to-day basis. The hearing should be completed within three months," the bench, also comprising Justice A K Sikri, said.
"The bail granted by this court on October 17 is extended by another four months, that is, till April 18, 2015," the bench said.
It also asked senior advocate KTS Tulsi, appearing for Jayalalithaa, who was awarded four years jail term along with a fine of Rs 100 crore in the DA case, to provide a copy of documents of the case to BJP leader Subramanian Swamy.
Swamy, during the brief hearing, raised the issue of law and order in Tamil Nadu, saying the posters of the slain LTTE chief Prabhakaran are being pasted across the state.
"We gave you (Swamy) the liberty that if there is anything against you, you just mention that before us. We will take a call," the bench said.
On October 17, the apex court had granted conditional bail to Jayalalithaa, who was sent to jail by a trial court on September 27, saying that hearing on her appeal against conviction in High Court should be completed in five months from now.
The apex court, which had also granted bail to the AIADMK chief's close aide Sasikala and two of her relatives, had refused to dispose of the bail plea while posting the case for hearing today.
The 66-year-old politician, who had moved the Supreme Court for bail on October 9 after she was denied bail by the Karnataka High Court, had submitted that she had been sentenced to only four years jail in the case and she was also suffering from various ailments, as grounds for her immediate relief.
The Special Court had held Jayalalithaa and three others guilty of corruption. The court had also slapped a fine of Rs 100 crore on the AIADMK chief and Rs 10 crore fine on each of the three other convicts.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A high-level delegation including Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan will visit Prime Minister Narendra Modi to appraise him of the crisis faced by rubber farmers due to its fall in price.
Ahead of this a meeting of rubber farmers would be convened here on December 18, the chief minister told the state assembly. The decision was taken on the basis of discussion held with a recommendation team that included former ministers. It has also been decided to increase the production of rubberized bitumen from 8000 tons to 50,000 tonnes aimed for construction of rubberized roads in the state.
The need of rubberized tarring in the entire country would be brought to the notice of the Central Government. It is a matter of protest that the Central Government has not taken into consideration the persistent request of the State to include rubber as a farming commodity.
More pressure will be exerted to consider this. It has also been decided to formulate a new package for rubber re plantation. The need to increase the subsidy for the same from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000 was also raised in the meeting.
It has also been stressed in the meeting that the import duty of rubber should be increased from 20% to 25%. The team would also raise the need of an independent market for the rubber wood. The need to call a confederation of rubber producing countries by India will be stressed. The rubber price has fallen from RS 240 to RS 109. As this is causing huge loss rubber growers have stopped collecting milk from rubber trees. If this situation prolongs then rubber farming would be in peril which would affect industries. Rubber import should be banned temporarily, he added.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Nurses in Kerala might be able to go to Kuwait without paying the hefty fees that private agencies charge as the state government plans to entrust state agencies with the task of recruiting nurses. These agencies include the Overseas Development and Employment Promotion Consultants (ODEPC) and Roots-Norka (the agency that looks after the welfare of the Kerala diaspora).
The idea was mooted by the Indian embassy in Kuwait after numerous complaints of Kerala nurses recruited through private agencies getting a raw deal in terms of salaries and service conditions. State Minister for Diaspora K.C. Joseph told IANS: "The Centre has to chip in for this and we are preparing a detailed road map to see that our own agencies also enter into this and Kuwait is one target area." The nurses who seek jobs in Kuwait have to shell out huge amounts as recruitment fees, touching more than Rs 1 million.
Speaking to IANS a nurse currently employed in Kuwait said that it's the Indian nurses that are given a raw deal. "Nurses from Philippines come to work in Kuwait without paying any recruitment fees at all. Since we (Kerala nurses) come here after paying very high recruitment fees, despite all hardships we cling on here, as our first priority is to recover the recruitment fees, whereas Philippine nationals resign and return the moment they feel unhappy with the working conditions," said the Kerala nurse who did not wish to be identified.

SYDNEY: Two hostages who have been killed in the 17-hour-long hostage drama at a cafeteria in Sydney were identified as the manager of the Lindt Chocolate cafe and a lawyer.

The 38-year-old lawyer, Katrina Dawson, was a mother of three young children who became the victim of the siege.

She was a barrister at Selbourne Chambers and was married to Paul Smith, a partner at Mallesons.

Dawson studied law at Sydney University, where she lived at the women's college as a student. She did her clerkship at Mallesons where she met her husband.

Lindt Chocolate cafe's 34-year-old manager, Tori Johnson, was also killed in the siege operations yesterday.

He had worked at the cafe since October 2012 and at a string of other restaurants and hospitality companies around Sydney.

"Yesterday, Premier Baird showed great steadfastness and Sydneysiders can be proud of their calm during what was a very difficult and testing day," he added thanking New South Wales (NSW) Police and all the other agencies involved for their professionalism and courage.

"Australians should be reassured by the way our law enforcement and security agencies responded to this brush with terrorism," he said.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott added that there is nothing more Australian than dropping in at the local cafe for a morning coffee and it's tragic beyond words that people going about their everyday business should have been caught up in such a horrific incident.

"Our hearts go out to all of those caught up in this appalling incident and their loved ones. On behalf of all Australians, I extend my sympathy to the families of the two hostages who died overnight," Mr Abbott said.

He warned that the country was vulnerable to politically motivated violence.

These events do demonstrate that even a country as free, as open, as generous and as safe as ours is vulnerable to acts of politically motivated violence.

"But they also remind us that Australia and Australians are resilient and we are ready to respond," he said. New South Wales (NSW) Polie commissioner Andrew Scipione said: "It's incredibly sad, I've got to say I don't think I could be sadder."

"Having said that, I'm completely proud of our police and what they have done to keep us safe, I've got nothing but praise for them," he said adding he wanted to see the flowers people had left as a tribute to the siege victims.

"I've come to have a look at what Sydney's done," he said. Meanwhile, flags on all Commonwealth and NSW Government buildings will be flown at half-mast today in honour of the victims of Sydney siege.

According to NSW premier Mike Baird, flags will fly at half-mast today on NSW Government buildings to honour those who tragically lost their lives in the siege at Lindt cafe.

Westpac also confirmed today that four of its employees were among the 17 hostages being held at Martin Place in Sydney.

All four were reportedly safe with one undergoing medical treatment for what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

The killed gunman was identified as 50 year old an Man Haron Monis, who arrived in Australia as a refugee from Iran in 1996.

Police fired stun grenades and shots as they stormed the Lindt Chocolate Cafe in Sydney's commercial district after 2:30 AM local time Tuesday (9 PM IST Monday) and later declared that the siege was over.

Two Indian nationals -- Vishwakant Ankit Reddy and Pushpendu Ghosh -- were among the hostages involved when Monis began his siege. However, Reddy, an Infosys employee in his mid-30s, and Ghosh, whose details were not known, escaped safely.

NEW DELHI: India today strongly condemned the barbaric attack on a school in Peshawar in which at least 160 children were killed, saying there is never a justification for terrorism.

"No words will capture the feeling of deep revulsion and horror we feel about this terror attack against innocent children of the Army Public School in Peshawar -  It was not just innocent children who have been massacred today, but the very conception of humanity,"
Official Spokesperson in the External Affairs Ministry Syed Akbaruddin said here.

Terming the attack as "crime against humanity", he said prayers are with the families and loved ones of all those who lost their lives or were injured in this barbaric incident.

"We hope the almighty gives them the courage and fortitude to bear their irreparable loss. There never has been, nor will there ever be, a justification for terrorism. Our hearts go out to the grief-stricken families of the innocent children killed and injured in this barbaric attack in Peshawar," he added.

At least 124 students were among 160 people killed earlier in the day when heavily-armed Arabic speaking Taliban suicide attackers stormed an army-run school, shooting from classroom-to-classroom and taking several hostages using them as human shield in Pakistan's volatile Peshawar city.

A group of 8-10 suicide attackers wearing paramilitary Frontier Corps uniforms entered Army Public School on Warsak Road around 10.30 (local time) and started indiscriminate firing, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak said there.
